Doris Clare Zinkeisen 1897-1991. Pencil and watercolour costume design for Miss Freehaven in the Chorus. Inscribed 1st Act Finale upper left & Miss Freehaven upper right. 35 by 54 cms image. 57 by 76.5 cms. Framed overall. Possibly a design for the 1935 London Stage production "Stop Press."

Doris Zinkeisen was a prolific and much sought after painter and stage designer, best known for designing the lavish sets and costumes for legendary showman Charles B. Cochran's London revues, as well as productions written by Noël Coward. Outside of the theatre, she and her sister Anna painted the famous interior murals for the luxury ocean liners the RMS Queen Mary and the RMS Queen Elizabeth.

Francesco Bartolozzi R.A. 1727-1815. Anglo-Italian School 18th.Century. Red and black chalk drawing on laid paper. A charming study of a sleeping baby. Oval 17 by 20.5 cms image. 23 by 26.5 cms overall in period gilt frame. (Frame has some losses as to be expected, to no real detriment). Inscribed to the backing: "Augusta d.of William Locke of Norbury m.1815 Admiral Sir George Martin K.C.B, G.C.H. drawn by Bartolozzi. Lady Martin was Great Aunt to Admiral Charles J Rowley" 

Provenance: William Locke (1732-1810) the noted amateur artist, connoisseur and collector. He purchased an estate at Norbury near Mickleham, Surrey in 1774. Employing Cipriani, Barret and Bartolozzi in its decoration. The birth of the sleeping Augusta depicted here in this intimate little study, ties in with Bartolozzi's time working for Locke at Norbury.

Mary Augusta (Locke) Martin 1775-1842 born at Norbury Park the daughter of William Locke and Frederica Augusta (Schaub) Locke 1750-1832, (The celebrated "Bluestocking" friend of Mme's D'Arblay and De Stael). Augusta was a sister to William Locke The Younger (An artist and noted protégé of Fuseli) and Amelia (Locke) Angerstein. She married 29 May 1815 Admiral George Martin at fashionable St Georges Hanover Square.

Circle of John Martin 1789-1854. British School Early 19th.Century. Watercolour drawing depicting the Great Fire of Edinburgh in November 1824. 23.1 by 14 cms. Provenance: Helene C. Seiferheld Gallery, New York (As John Martin), Freemans Auction Philadelphia 17/04/2024 Lot 23. (As Attributed to).

Previously attributed to John Martin under the title "The Destruction of S***m and Gomorrah." The painting actually depicts the Great Fire of Edinburgh which took place over three days in mid November 1824, when a catastrophic blaze swept through the city's Old Town. The present drawing appears to be a preparatory study for the finished oil painting of the subject in the collection of The Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead. Long credited directly to John Martin but more likely to be by a follower.

18th.Century English School chalk drawing. A beautifully observed academic male n**e study. Circa.1780. On wove paper. An accomplished but unidentified hand, old attributions to the reverse to both Alan Ramsay and John Constable, by neither in my opinion. Some surface grubbiness and rubbing, old tape stain to upper right corner. 26.3 by 36 cms. To framed image. 32.5 by 42 cms overall in early 19th.Century giltwood frame.
