Circle of Aubrey Beardsley 1872-1898. British School Late 19th.Century Pen and ink drawing. The Conductor. Unidentified monogram lower right.

A beautifully executed, enigmatic and dynamic drawing, very much in the style of Aubrey Beardsley, the celebrated and somewhat notorious illustrator, depictor of the grotesque, erotic and decadent. A leading figure of the Aesthetic movement, that also included James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Oscar Wilde. Beardsley's contribution to the development of the Art Nouveau style was highly significant. The unidentified stylised monogram lower right is most likely inspired by Japanese woodblock print stamps, known as Hankos. These were widely used within the artistic circle of both Beardsley and Whistler. Provenance: Private Collection UK. Measures 38 by 25 cms to mounted image. Some minor surface grubbiness and soft creasing, very slight foxing all to no real detriment.

Herbert Pizer 1890-1920 British School Early 20th.Century. "The Blue Bird", Watercolour and gouache drawing, Signed lower left, and inscribed verso, 30 by 45 cms.

A gorgeous original art work by Pizer who, had he not died young would certainly now be remembered as one of the great commercial artists. He had studios in both London and New York specialising in illustrative magazine work and commercial advertising. His work defined the changing visual culture of the post-WW1 era, 'The Jazz Age'. He captured the transitioning styles of the early Flapper and Art Deco Movements. Sadly his career was cut short when he died from appendicitis at the age of 30.

James Green 1771-1834. British School Early 19th.Century. A substantial watercolour portrait of a young woman in a white empire dress, a watch chain and seal fob on a chain below her breast, her shawl held by a lacepin. She stands in a summer landscape with deer in the distance and the sea beyond. She holds a parasol, her hand resting on a sundial, hydrangeas and poppies at her feet. Signed and dated lower right Jas.Green 1808. 46.5 by 58.5 cms. Image. 65 by 77 cms overall framed. Provenance. With Abbott and Holder London.

James Green was apprenticed to Thomas Martyn, who taught painting, at 10 Great Marlborough Street London. At the end of his apprenticeship, Green entered the Royal Academy Schools where he attracted the notice of Sir Joshua Reynolds, and in time copied many of his pictures. Green gradually attained a good reputation for his own portraits in watercolour and established a fashionable and sucessful practice in both London and Bath.

Attr. Jacques Charlier 1705-1790. French School 18th.Century. Watercolour on natural wafer laid on to card. A Classical scene with a couple in a landscape, she holds an arrow while he grasps her waist. Possibly The Abduction of Helen by Paris. 12 by 17 cms. Dateable to Circa.1750.

One of the foremost miniaturists of his time in 1753 Charlier was appointed "Peintre en Miniature du Roi" little is known of his early career but as he made many miniature copies after Boucher, it has been assumed that he studied under him. His patrons included the King, Madame du Pompadour, the Comte de Caylus, the Duc d'Aumont, the Prince de Conti and the Duc d'Orleans. He also received many commissions for the "Menus-Plaisirs du Roi" He seldom signed his work which makes any definite attribution difficult.
