"By far the most talented designer of his generation" and "one of the greatest set and costume designers England has ever produced." The 'Messel Production' of  Sleeping Beauty (1946) for which this is an original design, was arguably his defining masterpiece. Often revived (notably in New York, 1949 &  in Russia 1961), it was originally produced for the Sadler's Wells Ballet at The Royal Opera House in February 1946. Isaac Spackman 1700-1771. British School 18th.Century Embossed (Basso Relievo) Watercolour study of an 'American Blue and Yellow Maccau' Partial label to reverse, presented in original sanded slip ebonised fruitwood frame. 29 by 36 cms. Overall.

Spackman was perhaps the most accomplished imitator of the Irishman Samuel Dixon's embossed bird paintings. A sculptural technique designed to create an image that appears to raise the subject away from the background, leading to a three dimensonal effect. Both Spackman and Dixon used the engravings of George Edwards' Natural History Of Uncommon Birds' of 1743 as their source material. His output was not large and his works are exceptionally rare.
