An item formerly in the Ruzhnikov collection is now on view at the V&A exhibition: a silver-gilt Fabergé compact, richly decorated with translucent maroon enamel over a wavy guilloché ground, and featuring a chased acanthus rosette on the lid. The piece highlights the inspiration Cartier drew from its competitor’s work, particularly Fabergé’s exquisite guilloché enamels, for which the firm was renowned.

🖼 Fabergé’s Stratospheric Kiwi

A Fabergé Kiwi in grey agate (c.1910), 7cm tall, fetched a colossal €378,000 at Christie’s Paris on 20 November 2024. That price (equivalent to $398,000, £315,000, or a mind-numbing 675,000 New Zealand Dollars) includes an eye-watering 26% buyer’s premium: the hammer came down at €300,000 against what I thought was a substantial, if not unreasonable, estimate of… €70,000-90,000.

🖼 Sotheby’s Autumn Auction Preview

Sotheby’s are offering 194 lots of Fabergé, Imperial & Revolutionary Art in London on November 26. They only got around to posting their online catalogue in the second week of November, just three weeks before the sale. Serious auction houses usually plaster their PDF catalogues over the Net far earlier! As for a printed catalogue, forget it: the penny-pinching New Bond Street outfit stopped producing those yonks ago.

Fabergé Enamelled Silver-Mounted Karelian Birch Frame

A rare Karelian birch silver-mounted frame with a rectangular aperture in a reeded silver bezel tied with gilded red ribbons, containing an original photograph of the Tsarevitch Alexei Nikolaevitch, surmounted by a panel enamelled in scarlet over a moiré guilloché ground and applied with chased silver-gilt festoons, mounted below the aperture with silver bellflower and rose motifs gilded green and red; contained in Wartski fitted case.

Christ Pantocrator, Mstera School

early 20th century; tempera on wooden panel; 17.5 х 14.7 cm

A waist-length depiction of Christ Pantokrator with an open Gospel in His left hand and the right hand raised in a blessing gesture is one of the founding, canonical bases of His iconography; He is shown both as the King of Heaven and the future Judge of the World. The traditional inscription on the Gospel emphasizes the New Covenant between mankind and God: “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him” (Matthew 11:27-28).

Stylistic traits of the icon – with its subtle colour scheme, olive background, detailed inscriptions and Gospel text (with the bright capital letter), the overall refined quality and mastery of the slightly dark face of the Savior (bereft of any modelling) – all point to the piece’s creation in one of the Old Believer workshops in Mstyora, renowned for their “ancient style” painting. The icon demonstrates the so-called “academic stylization”, which comes into its own with the rise of academic restoration of iconography at the start of the 20th century.

The Iveron Mother of God
the second quarter of the 19th century, tempera and gold on wooden panel, 31.2 x 26.4 cm

Painted in warm, earthy colours in the traditional style, the icon portrays the Mother of God Iverskaya. The Mother of God and the Christ Child are depicted against a gold leaf background. The Virgin is shown bust-length, wearing a gold-embroidered maphorion with an azure blue lining, richly jewelled and with detailed tassels on the sleeves; with her left hand, she points towards her infant son, as a path of salvation. Seated on her left arm, dressed in a folded himation spangled with stars and holding a scroll in his left hand, a symbol of divine revelation, the Christ Child raises his right hand in a gesture of blessing. The outer border of the icon is painted with St.Mary of Egypt and the Angel Guardian.
