Bricked Up and Bernie

Great to have lyricist, artist and Iconic Images-collaborator, Bernie Taupin, with us at our Piccadilly Gallery today.

Bricked Up from the Bernie Taupin & Terry O'Neill collaboration

In his famous high collar and a scarf, legendary singer Elvis Presley arrives at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 1st, 1969, the day of his comeback press conference. With his addition of a wall of multi-colored, pixel-like blocks, Taupin's reworking and its title allude to the coercive influence Elvis's manager Colonel Tom Parker held over the singer's life and career.

* 16.5" x 23" editions of 199
* 31" x 44" editions of 50
* Signed and numbered on the front by Bernie Taupin
* Mixed media, pigmented digital print on Hahnemuhle Archival Photo Rag paper, 500gsm
* Large format images are printed with silkscreen

We’re really looking forward to Bernie’s new solo album, The Sea Has No Mercy, released October 23.

Watch this space for the next instalment of Framed with Taupin talking techniques…

National Album Day

A key date on your music calendar, National Album Day is an annual celebration of the album as an art form - encouraging people to listen to full records, discover new music, and recognise the album’s role as a space for artists to tell their stories.

Artists are at the heart of the campaign. Each year, Album Champions help bring it to life. Past champions include Alex Kapranos, Billy Bragg, Jake Bugg, Jazzie B, Joy Crookes, KSI, Kylie, Laura Mvula, Lewis Capaldi, Sharleen Spiteri and Shola Ama.

Each edition also has its own theme, which shapes activity across the campaign. Previous themes have included ‘The Eighties’, ‘Debut Albums’, ‘Groups’, ‘Albums by Women’ and ‘Rock’.

New releases, re-releases and special editions celebrate the extended, classic format.

This year National Album Day will be taking place on Saturday 17 October, focusing on the theme of ‘Icons’.

Photographer Gered Mankowitz captured images used on two of this year’s special releases - Phil Collins Dance Into The Light (30th Anniversary Edition) and Slade Nobody’s Fools (Expanded).

On these works (originals and outtakes pictured here) Mankowitz said, “I loved working with Slade and shot nearly 40 sessions with them, including Nobody’s Fools in 1976 - one of seven album sleeves. Originally, I had hoped that the record company would use a black and white shot with the red noses hand coloured, but it was decided to go with the full colour version, and I never understood why they faded out the bottom of the photo?”

“I had known Phil since working with him and his band Flaming Youth back in 1969 as well as several sessions with Genesis, so I was delighted to work with him again on the Dancing Into The Light album in 1996. We shot the session at a studio near his home in Switzerland, and he embraced the rather tricky technical issues of the session with great energy, dancing around the studio for several hours!”

Meet McGee!

Come and meet renowned British photographer Tony McGee.

Between 3pm and 8pm on Friday 16 October, London’s very own Tony McGee, photographer of countless fashion campaigns and close collaborator with David Bowie, will be at Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly to meet fans, sign books and talk about his work.

A born storyteller with a vivid memory, Tony is almost as gifted a conversationalist as he is a photographer. How did get his shot of The Small Faces loitering outside his Pimlico home when he was in his early teens? What did Bowie like to listen to as he was photographed? How did Tony manage his session with a young Kate Moss in 1989?

To hear these tales and more, and to view his stunning exhibition Fame, Fashion, McGee, visit us at 16 Waterloo Place between 3pm and 8pm on Friday October 16. Entry is free and no ticket is required.

Bill Wyman at 90

In celebration of our dear friend Bill Wyman’s 90th year, Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly will be displaying a selection of his best photography, which brings together the people, places and encounters that have filled his world: the Rolling Stones off duty, blues legends on stage, visits to Marc Chagall and conversations with James Baldwin. There is mischief, friendship and the everyday business of an extraordinary life.

But Wyman’s curiosity has always reached beyond the company he keeps; a butterfly on lavender or the glow of a flower can command his attention just as sharply.

During the famously tumultuous recording of Exile on Main Street, he took a quiet moment away from the studio to capture dawn in the valley of south Grasse. Also on display are peaceful moments on the Thames Embankment, and on the Albert Bridge, near Wyman’s home in Chelsea.

The work will be on display from the 23–27 of October. All of Bill Wyman’s signed and estate-stamped photographs are available for sale. For information on how to acquire, email [email protected].

Nothing New: Works by DaddyBears

For one week only, Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly presents Nothing New: Works by DaddyBears, a pop-up exhibition of textile sculpture and mixed-media works by British artist DaddyBears. Art critic Maeve Doyle, the show’s curator, describes the exhibition as “a golden opportunity for collectors and curators”, adding that it is “vitally important” to champion exciting artists at the beginning of their careers.

Across seven works, DaddyBears transforms satin, stuffing, wood, thread, canvas and beads into strange, seductive forms that shift between bodies, furniture, toys and miniature architecture. Working with pattern cutting, hand sewing and found materials, DaddyBears takes techniques associated with fashion, domestic labour and “women’s work” and pushes them into uncanny sculptural territory.

Nick Scavo, Assistant Director of Music, Performance & Events at MoMA PS1, describes DaddyBears works as ones in which “time, labour, and intimacy are embedded into fabric and form.”

Collectors should not miss this unique opportunity to view the works of a young, already highly regarded artist showcasing her singular work in the heart of London.

David Bowie: Music Lover

Double-signed copes of David Bowie: Music Lover by co-authors Geoff MacCormack and JĂŠrĂ´me Soligny and published by ACC Art Books are now available at Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly while supplies last.

David Bowie was the original influencer. For five decades, his songs helped shape the landscape of popular music. But what did he listen to? Which artists, songs and albums did Bowie tune in to throughout his life?

This book, the first of its kind, reveals more than 100 artists that made it onto Bowie’s turntable.

David Bowie: Music Lover is a compelling mix of personal insight and expert commentary, jointly written by Bowie’s lifelong friend, collaborator and listening companion, Geoff MacCormack, and Jérôme Soligny, author of the seminal Rainbowman, who knew Bowie for 25 years.

From Classical to Britpop, Electronica to Delta Blues, the book explores Bowie’s eclectic playlist, redolent of the decades he lived through but also of his deep interest in all genres and eras of music. It’s a story that begins with Little Richard on Bowie’s childhood Dansette record player, and ends with Kendrick Lamar, a go-to listen during the recording of Blackstar, released just two days before he died.

An indispensable guide for Bowie fans and all Music Lovers.
