Paul Jenkins: Immanent Colour, Works on Paper from the 1990s in Watercolour and Ink, confirms the artist’s place as one of the modern masters of the watercolour medium. Jenkins made watercolours throughout his life. His works are in museums internationally and throughout the UK, including a watercolour in the Victoria & Albert Museum.

“Watercolour is not elusive,” Jenkins wrote. “It is the architecture beneath the sea that cries to be left out, to be discovered. And when it rings right, it sounds very much like a bell tolling deeply in the sea from some strange sunken chapel.”

This exhibition explores the artist’s unique relationship with watercolour looking specifically at his late works from the 1990s. Isabelle Dervaux, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Drawings at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City observed that Jenkins’ watercolours exemplify the paradox of an art form that can be so spontaneous and yet be so demanding and require so much control on the part of the artist. “To me there is nothing left to chance in watercolour,” Jenkins wrote.

This year two Redfern artists will have major exhibitions at prestigious UK galleries.

Eileen Agar: Angel of Anarchy at the Whitechapel Gallery and
Margaret Mellis: Modernist Constructs at Towner Eastbourne.

Both are long anticipated exhibitions. Along with the many admirers of Agar and Mellis, we look forward very much to discovering the museum curators' unique vision and interpretation of these artists' works.

Eileen Agar: Angel of Anarchy
Whitechapel Gallery
COMING SOON
This definitive retrospective charts Eileen Agar’s ground-breaking career from the 1920s to the 1990s. From early works influenced by her teachings at The Slade, through her experiments with Cubism and her inclusion in the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition, to her later compositions of lyrical abstraction, Eileen Agar: Angel of Anarchy features over 150 works. Pieces from important public and private collections as well as newly discovered archival material reveal Agar as one of the most dynamic, bold and prolific artists of her generation, which included friends Andre Breton, Gertrude Hermes, Dora Maar, Lee Miller, Paul Nash and Man Ray.

Margaret Mellis: Modernist Constructs
Towner Eastbourne
16 OCT - 30 JAN 2022
This exhibition draws from Mellis’ extensive repertoire of work, spanning her career and illuminating the breadth of her practice and underlying narratives: it brings together her early experiments in collage under the guidance of Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo in the 1940s, the vibrant abstracts of the 1950s and 1960s (reminiscent to those of her friend and contemporary William Gear), and the contemplative, yet playful driftwood constructions that dominated the final twenty years of her practice.

We are pleased to present En atelier, a film by Ron and Meriel Kenley.

The art writer David Anfam and the artist Pierre Skira meet in the latter's Paris atelier. The two men discuss the making of art and its many-sided issues and consequences. The space of Skira's workshop is revealed as an instrument in itself and the background to the creative spirit.

En Atelier forms part of a larger project on the life and work of art historian David Anfam. Of First and Last, mainly filmed at the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, Colorado, is a singular biography, encompassing not just visual art but also diverse insights into culture, history, identity and society.

En Atelier is not the first film about Pierre Skira.
Olivier Etcheverry's beautifully crafted film Vie coye was made in 1985.

‘The city has been central to my paintings. Over the years, my way of viewing and painting the imagery has changed. From the shiny surfaces of cars to the distorted reflection of the city buildings within the car surfaces, to the actual buildings and their reflections. Finally, embracing all elements of the city life: contemporary buildings, people, traffic, language, shop windows and powerful city advertisements. I have walked and walked in cities throughout the world. They uplift and fascinate me.’

PATRICK PROCKTOR private view
@londonoriginalprintfair online Christmas edition launch

Having represented the Patrick Procktor Estate since the early 1960s, we are delighted to present at LOPF an online viewing room of Patrick Procktor prints.

'His graphics are instantly recognisable for a rare control of the aquatint that imaginatively recreates the subtlety and translucency of wash tone.' In this online collection, we can admire, as Tessa Sidey described in 1985, 'his search for the beauty in the landscape, founded on a method of poetic intuition'.

JOHN CARTER: IN PRINT

Live @ifpda Fine Art Print Fair https://bit.ly/3nNOEzf

John Carter emerged in the 1960s as one of the brilliant New Generation artists. The apparent simplicity and directness of his beautiful, limpid abstract works disguises a subtlety that extends even to their definition as painting, printmaking or sculpture.
