🎬 FILM FOR A FIVER: Everybody to Kenmure Street + Q&A

Join us for a special screening of Everybody to Kenmure Street, followed by a Q&A with special guests from Glasgow.

In May 2021, when a Home Office dawn raid threatened the deportation of two residents in Glasgow’s Pollokshields, hundreds of local people took to the streets in an extraordinary act of peaceful solidarity. Their eight-hour stand-off became an internationally celebrated example of community resistance.

Executive produced by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson and directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Felipe Bustos Sierra, this powerful documentary tells the story through footage from the day, archive material and first-hand testimonies. Featuring an original score by Barry Burns of Mogwai.

Following the film, hear from political activist and human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar and Kenmure Street resident and Stand Up To Racism national officer Julie Sherry Bryce.

Presented in partnership with Stand Up To Racism Merseyside as part of its 'Film for a Fiver' series, accompanying our 50 Years of Rock Against Racism exhibition.

The Shadows - The Story Behind the Band

Join us next week - Wednesday 21 October - as celebrated music historian and Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley discusses his new biography of The Shadows with fellow fan Will Sergeant, songwriter and guitarist with Echo & The Bunnymen.

From working-class beginnings in Newcastle and London to becoming one of Britain’s biggest and most commercially successful bands, Bob’s definitive biography explores the extraordinary story of The Shadows - and their influence on generations of musicians.

With famous fans including David Gilmour, Neil Young, Brian May, Mark Knopfler and Pete Townshend, their legacy stretches far beyond their countless hit records.

We're very excited to welcome Joe Florek and his Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton open decks to our Star Cafe on November 8th as we expand our Sunday afternoon events programme.
A self confessed vinyl nerd, Joe has been running open decks events since 2012 around the North West, currently with regular gigs in New Brighton and Runcorn, and previously in Liverpool, Manchester and Chorlton.
The name of the event “Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton” is a play on the 1999 Hip Hop album “My Vinyl Weighs a Ton”.
It celebrates inclusivity and sharing a love of all genres of music. Everyone is welcome, bring 5x7”s or three 12”s, and Joe can show you how to use the decks. As he says: "here’s the secret: It’s EASY and anyone can do it."
The session runs from 1-30pm-4pm.

Don't miss hearing from singer-songwriter J. Madden at the next of our My Singles Life sessions on Sunday October 25th.
Initially making himself known through his work with Hooton Tennis Club, J. Madden has emerged, his own performer, colourfully documenting his navigation through life's eccentricities with wit and fervour.
Self-releasing his debut album 'Same Day As Yesterday' in 2021, and following that with a 2024 EP 'Slow Illumination', J. Madden has been working relentlessly between his own music, co-writing with Hooton Tennis Club and performing as part of Hank Bee.
He has now joined the ever burgeoning ranks of 9x9 Records ahead of the release of his second record, 'Rum Baba'.
He’ll be choosing a selection of his favourite songs to listen to and discuss, and the event starts at 2pm in our Star Café.
Entry is free, so grab a seat early.

Two weeks today we'll be welcoming former Scritti Politti drummer Tom Morley to the British Music Experience discuss his work and career.
He was there at the start as the band formed in Leeds and developed in a London squat - famously pointing the way for other bands to explore independent releases.
Following his time in the music business with the band Tom has developed a truly artistic way of living where every experience leads him to the humorous uncovering of some universal truth.
He turns his disasters and successes into stand-up comedy for audiences. 40 years onstage, first behind a drum kit then being the multi-talented front man for whole troupes of performers earned him the name ‘The Rockstar Activator’ - though his recent autobiography is called ‘Just A Drummer’.

Oh! Brother – A Podcast About The Fall We’re delighted to welcome former members of The Fall - Steve and Paul Hanley - to the BME for a special live recording of their acclaimed Oh! Brother podcast.
Joining them will be Liverpool legend David ‘Yorkie’ Palmer, who saw The Fall countless times as they established themselves as one of post-punk’s most distinctive bands.
The evening will be in two halves, with Steve and Paul first joined by Paddy Shennan, author of 'Not JUST About The Fall: 50 Adventures In A Post-Punk Paradise', before Yorkie joins them for a live podcast recording and plenty of memories of The Fall.
Expect stories, music, Liverpool connections and some brilliant Fall anecdotes.
📚 Paddy’s book will also be available to buy at the event.

From the movement’s beginnings in 1976 to its legendary carnivals, protests and powerful legacy, discover the stories behind the music and the people who stood up against racism.

Thank you for an incredible launch night!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us last Thursday for the sold-out launch event of 50 Years of Rock Against Racism.

It was a very special evening, beginning with a screening of White Riot, followed by a fascinating and wide-ranging Q&A with Roger Huddle, one of the founders of Rock Against Racism, and Tom Robinson.

It was brilliant to see the exhibition brought to life through their stories and memories, and to share the evening with so many people who continue to feel passionately about the music, activism and legacy of Rock Against Racism.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make it such a memorable night.

50 Years of Rock Against Racism runs until 3rd January 2027 – come and explore the exhibition and discover the story for yourself. Included with all general entry tickets.
