Dr Sarah Vaughan ([email protected]) and Dr Brooke Swash from the University of Chester are inviting UK veterans aged 18+ to take part in research exploring veterans' knowledge, attitudes and experiences around cancer and cancer awareness.

You don't need to have had cancer to take part. We want to hear from veterans about what they know about cancer, what shapes their views and how we can better promote awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer.

Your perspective could help us better understand the needs and experiences of the veteran community and inform future research.

Five Allies. Five Axis. The ten people who shaped the longest campaign of the Second World War, rated out of 100 for strategic influence, leadership, tonnage/kills, innovation and historical impact. (Our ratings: subjective, and open to argument!)

Three of our Allied cards (Admiral Sir Percy Noble, Admiral Sir Max Horton and Captain Gilbert Roberts) did their work right here, in the bunker beneath Derby House. Captain 'Johnnie' Walker sailed from Liverpool and was buried from Liverpool Cathedral.

From the depths of the Battle of the Atlantic... to the depths of Chester Town Hall. 🔒
Our new sister attraction, Chester Cells, opens on Saturday 24 October!
Beneath Chester Town Hall lies a Victorian police station and its lock-up cells, used from the 1800s right into modern times and normally closed to the public. Now you can step inside on a one-hour guided tour, hear real stories of crime and justice, and discover what life was like for the people who waited here for their day in court.
If you've loved exploring our secret wartime bunker under Derby House, this is the perfect next adventure, just 45 minutes down the road.
🗓 Opens Saturday 24 October
⏰ Tours every 45 minutes, 10:00 to 16:45, at weekends and in school holidays
👥 Small groups of up to 15, so book ahead

During the dark days of World War II, The Futurist Cinema became a place to distract yourself from the world around you.

When the war broke out, cinemas were initially closed in 1939 due to safety concerns regarding large crowds.

However, the government reversed the ban within a week, realising that people desperately needed war effort news reels and a place to keep morale high.

In May 1941, severe air raids rained on the city. The Futurist’s facade and its neighbor, The Scala, both suffered devastating bomb damage.

As the cinema was deemed so important for the community, teams rushed to repair the building. And within just a month, by June 1941, The Futurist reopened its doors, and was back to showing films and vital news updates to the public.

The building opened in 1912 as Lime Street Picture House and was later demolished in 2016.
