The Walker Art Gallery houses an internationally-renowned collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative art. It is one of Europe’s finest galleries, with a collection that ranges from outstanding modern and contemporary works to Medieval and Renaissance masterpieces. Some of the greatest British artists of the last century are represented in the contemporary galleries, from Lucian Freud to David Hockney, while the Gallery’s Impressionist collection is not to be missed. You can also see paintings by 17th and 18th century masters including Poussin, Rembrandt and Gainsborough, before taking in the Walker’s famed Pre-Raphaelite collection. Younger visitors will love Big Art for Little Artists, a gallery designed to introduce children to art in a fun and interactive way.

One of the Family by Frederick George Cotman, 1880 ❣️Cotman painted this romantic scene of rustic domestic life at the Black Boy Inn at Hurley on Thames. It shows a farmer (posed by the inn keeper) returning home for his meal, while his horse leans through the doorway to be fed by the farmer's wife.

Louise Giovanelli's Mise en Scène (2025) is on display in Room 12 at Walker Art Gallery ✨

The conceptual potential of Giovanelli’s paintings is often extracted from sources such as photographs, film stills, classical sculptures, and architectural details. Deftly manipulating light and form, her multivalent imagery reminds us that the classical foundations of painting remain sources of delight and innovation. Keenly attuned to the historical significance of painting as a medium and system of representation, her paintings challenge the eye by dissolving representation into carefully crafted textures and patterns.

Missing our Gender Stories exhibition? Although Gender Stories has now closed, you can step back into the exhibition space with this special Museum Sessions performance from Casa Nuestra.

Filmed amongst the artworks, vibrant Liverpool-based Latin music quartet Casa Nuestra bring a blend of Cuban rhythms, boleros and bossa nova to the gallery. For their session, the group performed a stunning cover of Eydie Gormé’s version of Sabor a Mí, filmed in the Space to Reflect section of Gender Stories.

Have you visited room 12 at Walker Art Gallery recently?⚙️😇 In our contemporary gallery we bring a group of recent acquisitions into public view for the first time.

At the centre of the rehang is Michael Landy’s kinetic sculpture Multi-Saint (2013), made after the artist’s residency at the National Gallery in London and inspired by the Italian Renaissance painter Carlo Crivelli. Drawing on Christian iconography, it brings together five martyred saints, Catherine, Lucy, Peter Martyr, Lawrence and Michael, tying the new display back to the Walker’s collection of religious art from the 15th century onwards.
