✨🎨Gender Stories traces the spectrum of genders and their expression across time and place, exploring how gender intersects with s*x, class, s*xuality and heritage to shape who we are. A meeting of music and Victorian imagination in the gallery today. ❤️‍🔥🥀🌀

From dreamy landscapes, to stories of love, longing and transformation, the Pre-Raphaelites continue to inspire artists today.

We loved talking about the stories behind the paintings with singer, Paris Paloma, while she was in the city after last night’s gig at Rough Trade Liverpool.

This World Photography Day we take a look at some of the photographs in our Gender Stories exhibition, closing soon on 31 August ‼️

📸✨Chiddy Doing Rene's Hair 2019 by Rene Matić, is part of the artist’s series ‘flags for countries that don’t exist but bodies that do’. It includes intimate portraits of the artist, their friends and family, alongside photographs of contemporary Britain. Collectively, the series questions the notion of ‘Britishness’ today.

📸✨Girls in Car 3 2005 by Shirin Aliabadi is part of a series of four images in which document the social phenomenon of evenings spent in the car, characteristic of the young urban middle class in Iran in the 2000s. Theranese youth, limited in socialising with the opposite gender in public space, used car travel as a pretext to interact, causing massive traffic jams on the streets of the north of the city.

Charli Kleeman's 'Gun rack' (2025), featured in our Gender Stories exhibition, explores themes of trans-hypermasculinity, craft and the cultural presentation of violence.

Through sculpture, Kleeman examines how masculinity is constructed, performed and displayed, inviting viewers to question familiar ideas about gender, identity and power.
