Earlier this month Connector Project’s young researchers met for the first time. Lucy Moynihan, Freelancer Research Associate told us more ⬇️

"We held our first workshop for the Overwriting-Underwriting programme at the University of Liverpool where the Centre for the Study of International Slavery is based.

This was our first chance to meet and learn more about each other’s perspectives on the history of enslavement. We chatted about the plans for the programme, taking care of ourselves in the process, and how we’ll be thinking collectively around the themes of memory and representation in a digital age.

We also worked with some archival material from the Sydney Jones special collections and archive, including some logbooks which belonged to Thomas Leyland, one of Liverpool’s most prolific traffickers of African captives. This introduced us to one of the guiding questions in the programme: whose voice is missing from the archive of underwriting and enslavement, and whose voice do we hear?

I’m really looking forward to working alongside such an amazing group of young researchers, and seeing where the research journey takes us."

Very sad news.

Bonnie Greer had a remarkable voice and brought complex ideas around art, identity, history and memory into the public conversation with intelligence, warmth and courage.

It was a great honour to welcome Bonnie to our Slavery Remembrance Day commemoration in 2022, when she delivered the Dorothy Kuya Memorial Lecture with Laurella Rinçon.

We send our sincere condolences to her family, friends and all those who were inspired by her work ❤🕊

Following the news that Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III has announced his retirement from Smithsonian, our Head, Michelle Charters OBE, said:

“Enormous thanks and gratitude to Lonnie, with whom we have had the privilege of working alongside for many years, from his Slavery Remembrance Day lecture here in 2003 to more recent partnerships between our institutions.

Lonnie’s contribution to the museum sector and to the understanding of African American history and culture has been profound. Through his leadership, scholarship and commitment to public history, he has demonstrated the vital role museums can play in bringing complex histories to wider audiences, encouraging deeper and more meaningful understanding and connection.

We wish Lonnie all the very best for a long, happy and well-earned retirement, and thank him for his friendship, collaboration and remarkable contribution to the museum and heritage sector.”

A look back at this year’s Slavery Remembrance Day: Walk of Remembrance 💌

Every August, people come together in Liverpool to remember the millions of people who were enslaved, those who resisted, and the generations whose lives continue to be shaped by its legacies today.

The Walk of Remembrance is a moment to reflect, remember and stand together connecting Liverpool’s history with the stories and experiences that continue to shape our city today.

Join the Transatlantic Slavery and Legacies in Museums Forum on 23 September 2026, 10am–12 noon, for a free webinar launching our new Framework of Care project and reflecting on three years of Forum activity.

Researched, written and edited by creative consultants, Gaylene Gould and Ella Phillips, the Framework of Care brings together reflections, case studies, summaries and key actions for senior decision makers and museum staff working with transatlantic slavery collections.

The Framework is not intended to be an objectively definitive guide. Instead, it has been shaped through a practice of care, multiplicity of voices, reflection and openness.
