Founded in 2003, Morningside Gallery specialises in contemporary art and works closely with emerging and established artists. We seek out, work with and mentor painters and sculptors who display talent, skill and intrinsic creativity and we are committed to nurturing their careers. tists and each month feature a collection of up to 20 works by one artist or a themed collection by a group of artists. There’s still a few days left to enjoy Into the Garden - our garden-themed exhibition. We’ve really enjoyed speaking with the artists involved and hearing more about how their gardens inspire their work - this is what Craig Jefferson told us:

“My garden is multifunctional. Presently, it's a space for my children. The 'football area' dominates and is free of anything breakable. Nothing survives the wayward shots and passes of my boys. There's barely any grass, let alone flowers.

Other garden spaces include the sheds (home of tools and bikes), the mud kitchen, the swings, the bins, the wood pile and the bench in the suntrap. There is only a small corner for a wardrobe sized greenhouse and a raised bed. I'm not a great gardener but I do manage to grow things. My favourites are sweet peas, nasturtiums and oxeye daisies. I have become conscious of their beauty by painting them. To paint anything is an experiential way of seeing it and this is especially true of flowers. They glow with brilliance. Their colour and character give me so much joy.”

We’re delighted to include several new paintings from Jennifer Irvine RGI RSW in our current garden-themed exhibition, bringing the wonderful light and colours of France into the gallery.

Jennifer says, “I am fortunate enough to be able to do work from three different gardens in the village which is an absolute gift for any artist. The quality of the summer sunshine in a French countryside garden is so much more intense, the luminous shadows more interesting and the colours so vibrant - all of these are the reasons for always finding an abundance of subject matter.”

Our garden-themed exhibition Into the Garden continues in the gallery and online until this Sunday, 21st June, with wonderful paintings from some much-loved artists.

The gallery is filled with the colours of the natural world - from summer scenes in full bloom to night-time gardens, autumnal shades and still life compositions.

Whether cultivated or wild, private or public, throughout history gardens have taken on meanings and roles as varied as their inhabitants and visitors. Artists have long celebrated what gardens offer; practically and aesthetically they are sites of creative exploration and sanctuary, offering a link to nature and an ever-changing scene of colour, form and texture.

Our garden-themed exhibition, Into the Garden, features paintings from a number of artists including Jenny Martin RSW. Working from her garden studio in Portobello, it’s no surprise that the natural world is an inspiration for her work. Jenny’s paintings usually begin with a colour palette or floral motif and evolve through collage, traced patterns, and layers of paint.

Our garden-themed exhibition Into the Garden features new paintings from a number of artists, including Lorna Sinclair.

After graduating in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in 2017, Lorna has exhibited work across Europe and the UK, whilst recently completing Art Residencies in Cyprus and Berlin.

Speaking about her garden inspiration, Lorna told us: “Gardens and outdoor spaces form the backbone of almost all my paintings - walking in gardens or parks is an essential part of my daily ritual. Whether it’s memories or sketches from a luscious, tropical garden from far-away travels or the verdant vista provided by my communal garden in Glasgow - outdoor spaces continue to bring me joy and a sense of serenity in my everyday life – something I want to capture in my paintings.

“I believe every garden has its own spirit – embodied in the nature, colours, sounds, textures and wildlife that inhabit it – which endlessly fascinates me. Being immersed in nature encourages us to slow down, and provides a beautiful escape from everyday life – like entering a new world. My paintings often stem from spontaneous watercolour sketches made in situ – either from a park or my kitchen table looking out onto the foliage. During this process the garden is re-imagined and transformed into its own magical world.

“In particular, the contrast of living in the bustling city of Glasgow and still finding quiet, green and luscious parks to escape into intensifies the pleasure and awe for me. I love walking in the same vibrant park next to my flat everyday, and being endlessly surprised by how different it looks each time. There’s something deeply nurturing about the ephemeral nature of flowers, making their intense, luminous colours in the spring and summer months feel even brighter. I try to capture that fleeting sense of vitality, movement, beauty and joy.”

Along with her expressive flower compositions, our new garden-themed exhibition includes paintings by Mhairi McGregor RSW which are set in gardens in Delhi. The gardens are part of a 16th century UNESCO World Heritage site built for Isa Khan, and expanded for the Mughal (Mongol) Emperor Humayun, a direct descendent of Genghis Khan.

Writing about her own garden, Mhairi says “I grew up in a Victorian orchard, in a house surrounded by apple and pear trees and all kinds of flora, so I suppose it’s no surprise that flowers and gardens often feature in my work. That same garden is now where my studio has been for several years, colourful, quiet and secluded – ideal for work or just enjoying.”

Today we’re sharing a look at artist Lesley McLaren’s garden along with some of her work which features in our new garden-themed exhibition.

On her garden inspiration, Lesley says:

“I’m so lucky to live in an old cottage with a good sized garden nestled in a valley in the Scottish Borders, right next to a farm. I could spend a lifetime painting what it holds - plants, birds, insects, wildlife and visiting cats... I do my best to maintain it but also I'm happy to let some areas go wild.

“This time of year the hawthorn hedge which surrounds and protects the garden is flowering and the smell alone is intoxicating. My summerhouse allows me to observe the drama when the odd shower passes - birds cavorting with their young until the sparrowhawk dares to dive in, hedgehogs at dusk and the occasional badger stealing fat balls. Inspiration abounds in every nook and cranny here. It's my favourite place in the world.”

Our new garden-themed exhibition features work from a number of artists, including Jacqueline Orr RSW RGI PAI.

Jacqueline shared the sketches that inspired some of her paintings from the show, and told us what gardens mean to her:

“From my experience of living in France and Kintyre, both normally blessed with fine weather during the summer months, I view a garden as another room in the home. Indeed we virtually lived in the garden during the summer months. It is often a place of sanctuary, tranquility, beauty and space, as well as a place to enjoy the company of family and friends. It is also a place to connect with nature and its inhabitants; from ducks, geese, wild boar, stags(!), frogs, birds and an abundance of insect life which keeps a garden thriving.

“In practical terms, a garden can be a source of both physical and psychological nourishment; in Kintyre we had an extensive vegetable plot in the garden growing a variety of vegetables which sustained the household. In France, our neighbours had a beautiful garden with their own potager where we helped them grow potatoes, tomatoes, beans and herbs which flourished in the hot French summers. Apples and peach trees adorned the garden amidst the hostas, hollyhocks, magnolias and lilies. These were tranquil and happy spaces.

“Alfresco dining features heavily in my paintings. The constant search for shade under the garden trees during the long hot French summers provided plenty of opportunity to paint the dazzling patterns created by dappled light. In my paintings the emphasis is not on specific plants or trees, but trying to capture the sense of tranquility, sunshine and verdant space.”

We’ve brought the garden to the gallery this week, with flowers in the window alongside some wonderful garden-inspired work from Ann Oram RSW.

Into the Garden celebrates gardens in their many forms, exploring the creative engagements that artists develop with their own green spaces. The exhibition includes a special feature of Ann’s paintings as part of her 70th birthday year celebrations, along with new works by Jacqueline Orr RSW RGI PAI, Jennifer Irvine RSW RGI, Jenny Martin RSW, Kate Bentley RSW, Mhairi McGregor RSW, Lesley McLaren, Lorna Sinclair and Craig Jefferson.

Talking about how gardens influence her work, Ann says “Gardens are my sanctuary and my studio. Rather than reaching for a ready-made bunch from a florist or supermarket (and I do on occasions!), I seek out the living, breathing abundance of real gardens. It is the flowers I discover there that become the main focus of every composition and still life I paint.��

“What draws me to gardens is the element of surprise. The seasons dictate what I find, and I love what that gives me. My travels take me from the grandeur of Kew and Edinburgh Botanical Gardens to the quiet charm of a roadside verge in blossom, a field of oxeye daisies, or a hedgerow thick with cow parsley. I count all of these as gardens.”
