Whilst the gallery receives some TLC on our current break we wanted to highlight the work of Soorin Shin who has a number of works featured in our current exhibition.

Soorin Shin creates sculptural forms inspired by roots, horns, pebbles, plants, and historical and cultural artefacts connected to female identity. Recently Soorin introduced ceramics into her practice, developing a technique that uses 3D-printed moulds in the slip-casting process. In the series Porcelaina 3.0 (2026) featured in the exhibition, Soorin explores East Asian female identity and re-examines the history of porcelain, which was often admired in the West and linked to ideas of female beauty, domesticity and delicacy. The three ceramic sculptures are based on traditional Korean vases —Hangari, Maebyeong and Byeong - with the addition of arms and legs. Together, these figures appear strong and determined, expressing resilience and resistance, challenging old stereotypes.

We’re excited to introduce our visitors to the work of Sanne Visser, one of the artists whose work features in our current exhibition 'User Interface: Coded Craft'.

Sanne’s work focuses on material innovation and sustainable design, she is widely known for developing innovative uses for human hair. Her project, The New Age of Trichology began in 2016 driven by the question: How can human hair waste be transformed into useful materials and products?

Human hair is an abundant, renewable resource. In the UK alone, around 6.5 million kilograms of hair waste is produced every year. Hair has many useful qualities: it is strong, lightweight, flexible, insulating and able to absorb oil. Using traditional techniques such as spinning and rope making, Sanne transforms hair into yarns, ropes and textiles. These materials are then used to create products such as bags, mirrors and swings. The work displayed in the exhibition gives visitors an insight into both the design process and the importance of community involvement in creating positive change.

Edinburgh Art Festival, the UK’s largest annual festival of visual art launches this week including over 70 events and exhibitions across 40 Partner Galleries and Venues from 14 - 30 August.

We will launch our Autumn show in Edinburgh on Friday 21 August as part of the Art Festival.
