Collaging with Data new works by Ploterre last week of exhibition open today until Sunday 28 April 10am-2pm each day or by appointment.

Collaging with data was sparked by a series of prints called Calcium Light Night by Eduardo Paolozzi, which visualised music from the same name. This project sets out to visualise a different type of music by tracing a journey along the Water of Leith. The body of water that criss-crosses the city and ends in Paolozzi’s birthplace on what would have been his centenary year.

Over the course of thirteen miles from Balerno to Leith, information was collected on sounds, bridges and the ever changing green space outwith this ribbon of green. Covering every footstep taken from the direction to elevation, this series of prints visualises a personal exploration of one journey from A to B.

Rebecca Kaye (ploterre) is an Edinburgh based artist specialising in using environmental data as a material to create artwork. She graduated from The University of Manchester with a degree in mathematics and later went on to complete postgraduate studies in visual communication at Edinburgh Napier. This project was a collaborative effort with Jim Marsden. Based in the north of England and using solely film, Jim brings a different perspective to the journey through photography. And it is these photographs that formed the starting point for this body of work.

An exhibition of prints, exploring the natural world using data by ploterre.

Based in Edinburgh, ploterre is the moniker of Rebecca Kaye. After studying Mathematics at The University of Manchester, she then undertook a research masters in visual communication at Napier.

Each piece of work starts with a curiosity. What colours fly into our green spaces more than any other? How does wave height change by month, year after year? Can you predict tree ring growth from weather data? Using existing observations alongside personal field notes, Ploterre sets out to answer these questions using a variety of information. After a long journey of research, insights are unearthed and stories are ready to be shared through the art of design.

Combining these two fields with a love of the outdoors and a natural curiosity, she now creates limited edition artworks based on her explorations of the natural world, in pursuit of a deeper understanding of the environment and the species that call it home.

Armed with data in place of a map, the journey shapes every step of the creative process from the materials and tools used to the overall design of each new piece of work.

This journey and its creations endeavour to tread as lightly as possible. The final pieces are made locally in small batches using human powered, traditional processes and local, natural materials.

Our associate programme continues this week with ‘Heavy Without it,’ an exhibition by Rory Dixon aka DJ Dynamite.

Opening Friday the 28th of October 6-8pm at Sierra Metro.

Rory Dixon wears his art on his sleeves. From a young age Rory has been DJing, making his own music, recording, drawing, collecting, designing and wearing his work. When Rory says ‘Art is a process not a product,’ he is living proof of that.

Combining vibrant colour schemes derived from his interest in all things Vegas and counterculture – Rory’s artwork, in all its flamboyance and wildness poses a pertinent question: What is style?

Style is a decision: How you cut your hair, how you wear your socks – style is how we show ourselves – whether you conform or perform. When Rory says ‘fashion gives me my sense of myself’ he means it. Rory is a living, breathing artwork.

Hope to see you there!

PREVIEW: Friday 30 September 6-9pm
Ergo, new works by Jack Sheahan

“Furniture is for people, and necessarily follows the human form. All creation is an approximation. There are no neutral processes. Everything that is made tells witness to the process of its creation.”

Following on from his Jorum Craft Award, Jack Sheahan further explores the concept of the ‘ergonomic engine’ and different construction methods to explore chair building, how they feel to sit in, and the interplay between creation as a verb and noun.

Jack Sheahan is a furniture maker specialising in traditional woodworking techniques, inspired by Japanese philosophies of making and Scandinavian aesthetics.

Open 1 – 16 October 2022 / 10am–2pm or by appointment
