Frontage collage with screenprint and soft pastel on found card
65 x 52cm

On display at Architecture Reassembled with Charles Young until 20 June.

Ros Lawless came across a selection of stones on a visit to Barbara Hepworth’s Garden in St Ives, Cornwall. She was struck by their architectural quality and began to draw them. Not having a sketchbook on her she resorted to sketch the stones on a postcard she possessed from an earlier visit to Penwith Gallery. As she drew she became excited how the composition interacted with the card.

Returning to her St Ives studio, she worked intuitively to recreate the stones shape using a variety of techniques, such as found papers that she recycled, monoprint, screenprint and collage with soft pastel on top. Penwith represents the beginning of a body of work that continues to combine the techniques of collage and printmaking.

Architecture Reassembled
Ros Lawless & Charles Young
Until 20 June.

The assembled sculpture ‘Wright’s Houses’, made up of four separate works by Charles Young, highlights a past ghost version of part of the city close to the gallery.

The buildings rendered in blue represent the present; on one side the tall tenement building and on the other the present pub. The copper clad structures are a ghost version of the missing 26 – 28 Wright’s Houses, removed around 75 years ago.

The area now bounded by Barclay Place, Barclay Terrace, Bruntsfield Links and the end of Glengyle Terrace started as the settlement named on a map of 1682 as ‘Wrightshous’. Built and rebuilt over time, the oldest remaining feature is the early 19th century building currently occupied by the Golf Tavern. At different times called Golfhall, the Golf House Tavern and the Golf Hotel, an inn has existed here since at least the early 18th Century, but has drifted in space downhill, through 27/28 Wright’s Houses to 30/31 where it sits today in a former tenement.

Opening Event
Meet the Artists
Saturday 31 May, 1-3pm

Exhibition continues until 20 June. Check website for details.

This exhibition brings together two artists whose interest lies in the built environment - both real and imagined

Ros Lawless’ practice is influenced by her immediate surroundings, in particular architecture, which she uses to organise pictorial space and form.

Charles Youngs’ work has its basis in architectural model making and draws on the forms of the built environment. He focuses on the relationship between invented structures and the built history of the existing city.

LAST SATURDAY
To see Clay & Fibre
By Jo Walker and Jillian Lee Adamson

Show ends 2 May

Shown here are a selection of Jillian’s Metaphorical Cells

As a neurodivergent, Jillian’s work is a distillation of the experiences she has gained in her life so far. Through the rhythmic and tactile process of slow stitching, she uses a needle and thread to create intricate and symbolic representations which represent a testament to her resilience, adaptability, strength and tenacity.

All artworks are on line to view. See gallery website.
