Watermarks
A free, guided art and writing workshop with artist & print maker Jean Duncan, writer & editors Kirsty Gunn & Gail Low
Date: 24 October
Time: 10.30-3pm
Meet at the D’Arcy Thompson Museum, University of Dundee, DD1 4HN at 10.30am
Water is all around us; in our bodies, in the oceans and seas... Without it there would be no life on earth. This art and writing workshop starts out with brief visits to two museums for stimulation (the D’Arcy Thompson Museum & the McManus), and then invites you to respond to how artists and others have taken their inspiration from water, and how their works might in turn inspire you in own creative mark making at ScrapAntics Community Space @ the Wellgate Centre.
We will start at the D’Arcy Thompson Museum before journeying to the McManus Gallery to see what’s on offer. You will be provided with a note/sketchbook to record your impressions, and there will be some advice to help you get started exploring the watery themes and ideas you will discover around you from these two spaces. We will then hotfoot to the ScrapAntics Community Space at the Wellgate and get stuck in making a watery artwork of your own drawing , painting and text collage. Feedback and mentoring will also be on hand, and refreshments will be provided. The workshop is free and art materials will be available to get you started. If you are aged between 16 and 25, we would especially love to hear from you!
No prior experience needed... just bring yourself and a sense of adventure. So join us — writer, Kirsty Gunn, artist Jean Duncan, and editor of imaginedspaces.org, Gail Low — to fashion your own watermarks, and have fun!
NB: “Estuary” is by Jean Duncan and “Puddle cloud rain” is by Jean Duncan (image) & Brian Hill (text).
This workshop is funded by the William S Phillips. The William S. Phillips Fund is a charitable trust supporting education and the arts in Dundee, particularly for young people and students pursuing advanced studies in art and design.
