Another sunny Saturday in charge 🦺

As we move into “Stage 2” of lockdown, we are beginning to get back to some of the jobs we had to stop in March 🗓

Today I thought I’d show you what we are currently working on and hoping to complete by the time the ship reopens to the public 🤞🏻

Job No. 1 is to install our new safety netting around the ship and I have managed to rope in Finlay (our learning & engagement officer) to help... I will try not to be too hard a taskmaster👨🏻‍⚖️

🧰As noted in our post yesterday, conservation work isn't just focused on the ship herself. HMS Unicorn has a fantastic collection which also requires attention. At the end of 2019, HMS Unicorn received a £500 grant from the War Memorial Trust, to cover the cost of conservation work to the ship’s WW1 and WW2 War Memorial, which are displayed on the ship’s Weather Deck.

The work was started last year when the memorial boards were taken to the Scottish Conservation Studio at Hopetoun House, just outside Edinburgh. The work will be finished this year by the studio at the same time as they undertake work on the ship’s dockyard model of Dundee’s waterfront.

By the end of the work, the memorial will have been cleaned and restored to a high standard in honour of the servicemen who lost their lives in World War One and World War Two. We are looking forward to welcoming these important memorials back to the ship and hope you'll enjoy seeing them restored to their best too🤗

🎉We are delighted to announce that funding has been secured to restore one of the ship’s collection highlights – a historic scale-model of the Port of Dundee.
Built in 1945, the model shows the layout of Dundee’s waterfront with some iconic pieces from the city’s history including the Royal Arch and Earl Grey Dock.
🧰The model had sadly deteriorated over the past 75 years but will now be restored to its original appearance and be given a new protective covering. The funding has been provided through the AIM (Association of Independent Museums) Remedial Conservation Grant Scheme, supported by the Pilgrim Trust.

Garry the Maintenance Man back in charge for another Saturday 👨🏻‍🔧

Today I am going to highlight some of the physical elements that make Unicorn so unique 👌🏻

Research by one of our volunteers has shown that the protective copper sheathing on the ship’s hull was last replaced around 1873, when she came to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This would make Unicorn the only ship of the “Golden Age of Sail” to have copper sheathing that dates to her life in service.

In fact, her copper is old enough to have turned green - a great example of the oxidation process in work. Statue of Liberty eat your heart out 🗽😉

🤝Although our volunteers give lots of time to #HMSUnicorn, we also like to spend time together as a group away from the ship, enjoying other activities. Be it meeting up for dinner or taking day trips to maritime sights around the UK🗺 we always like getting to know everyone and having fun as a team. It’s just a small way of saying thank you for everything our volunteers do and we can’t wait until we can get together again🤗

Today we say thank you to our #volunteers who assist with maintenance and repairs🛠 Being one of the oldest ships left in the world, Unicorn requires an ongoing programme of maintenance which simply could not be delivered without the fantastic support of our volunteer team.
From assisting with weekly checks and keeping the ship neat and tidy to repainting and repairing areas on board, our maintenance volunteers are the backbone of the life of the ship. Thank you to everyone involved in helping to preserve and protect the most original old ship in the world💪👏

As it is #VolunteersWeek, we are going to be highlighting all of the great work our volunteers do on board the ship💪 Throughout the year, HMS Unicorn typically runs a huge range of activities for visitors from workshops and tours to our annual Family Fun Days. None of this would be possible without the incredible support of our volunteers who have helped to run visitor events on board for over 4️⃣5️⃣ years. Thank you for everything you do👏🤩

Garry here 👨🏻‍🔧 What a sunny Saturday to be back in charge!

Today is going to be all about the ship’s timbers. As most of Unicorn is original, the majority of her timbers date to around 200 years old 🗓

As a result (and you can see from the pictures), we have the full spectrum of condition from “strong & sturdy” to “advanced wet rot”... It is easy to see why historic ships require so much work 🔨

✨Looking for a wee pick-me-up? Recently, we ran a competition which led to 2 randomly selected participants winning their own Cressy the Unicorn, a plush toy from our gift shop. As fate would be, one of the winners was the granddaughter of a former Unicorn volunteer🦄 Gillian entered the competition hoping to win Cressy for her daughter, Eleanor, who was named after her great-grandmother. On this day...
In 2016, HMS Unicorn launched a special exhibition to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Hood during World War II🇬🇧
During a vicious clash with the German battleship Bismarck, HMS Hood was lost along with almost her entire crew of 1,418 – only three men survived. It was the worst single-ship loss suffered by the Royal Navy during the entire war.
The exhibition told the story of HMS Hood as well as the nine Dundonians who served on board. One of the young men lost that day was John Knox, who was only 18.
His brother Duncan Knox attended the exhibition opening with his wife Ann and shared his memory of that sad day in 1941 – “I was walking along the docks in Montrose and a small patrol of ships went out at that time… The bloke said he heard on the radio that the Hood had sunk. When I said my brother was on it, he said ‘well we hear all things’… It wasn’t until night that it was official it had been sunk.”

On this day...
In 1984, Dundee’s The People’s Journal did a fabulous two-page spread all about the “Unique Unicorn” – the warship with a front doorbell🔔
This included news of the £7,000 exterior facelift of the ship when the timbers were sandblasted and repainted. It also highlighted the upcoming exhibition on the Mary Rose telling the story of the Tudor warship on board a Georgian one.
We think the best part of the article is the brilliant adverts from local businesses, tying them to the ship. This includes the advert from local security firm Electro Guard with their line – “Just as HMS Unicorn once safeguarded the nation’s security, so we aim to safeguard yours!”👏
But the best advert must go the Stobswell Bakery and Wallace Land O’ Cakes for their effort: “In this dark and cramped space, Unicorn’s 230 seamen wouldn’t see much of anything. The midday meal would typically consist of boiled salt pork or beef. If they were lucky there might even be weevilly biscuit or rancid cheese… What a pity they didn’t have Wallace ‘Land O’ Cakes’ Ltd...and their cannonball-sized bridies!”😆
Always nice to see local businesses in Dundee working together and supporting each other, much like current times🤝📰

Garry back again for another Saturday in charge 👨🏻‍🔧

Today I’m going to show you how different parts of the ship are connected - starting with the ship’s wheel ⛵️

Positioned on the upper deck, the wheel would have been connected to the massive cast iron tiller on the lower deck by strong leather “ropes” ⛓ And this in turn would move the rudder to steer the ship 🧭

30 years ago today Donna Mckay & Iain Mckay we’re married in HMS Unicorn 😍
Where are the details of the childrens painting competition please?
Thank you for this year's biggest Christmas miracle! A while ago my daughter lost her favourite stuffed toy, an adorable little unicorn bought while visiting the HMS Unicorn on our holiday to Scotland. She was of course devastated. I sent a desperate e-mail, and just in time for Christmas a new unicorn arrived in the mail, and my daughter woke up to the most wonderful surprise - it even included a little letter in Norwegian! Thank you so much for your great help, and best wishes for the new year!
I’ve always been fascinated with the Unicorn as I used to pass it on my way to swimming and also could be my Dad was in the navy and I dated a navy guy so just want to wish you all a MERRY Christmas and a HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎊🎊🎉🎉🎼🎵🎶🎹🍺🍺🍺🍺🍷🍷🍷🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇨🇦
for interest, a 3D model of HMS Unicorn by my son Daniel:
My Aunt, Edith Martin was proud to be one of the WRNS on HMS Cressy as the Unicorn used to be known. Sadly, she is no longer with us.
Great night of music with Martin Simpson. Not been on the Unicorn since my dad did security there back in the 80's I think. What a crackin venue for an intimate concert.
