📰News from HMS Unicorn📰
We're very grateful to local press and the Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce for helping share the news of the work which is to be done on HMS Unicorn's roof. This could not be achieved without the funding and support from Dundee Historic Environment Trust and Fife Environmental Trust. As many will know, Unicorn requires immediate attention to conserve and preserve her beauty and legacy.

Where the roof works is essential, we are also in serious need of further support to see to other necessary work on the ship. The Unicorn Preservation Society is working to secure further funding with plans to launch a public fundraising campaign. We look forward to sharing the news once this campaign is live and hope our friends and supporters of HMS Unicorn will help us protect the future of the ship.

The Queen Mother was the first Royal Patron of the UPS (Unicorn Preservation Society) and the sea cadets have a long association with the ship. Notice the radiator behind them when the ship used to have heating! Were you in the sea cadets? Did you by chance undertake activities on the ship at this time or did you meet the Queen Mother? 🎶Whistle While You Work🎶
Our last sea shanty post is all about one of Dundee’s most famous sailors (and possible pirate🏴‍☠️), Captain William Kidd.
Born in “Scotland’s Sunniest City” in 1645, Kidd was a privateer who was accused of piracy and executed in 1701.
🎼The Ballad of Captain Kidd dates from the time of Kidd’s execution and the tune became very popular in British colonies. To this day it remains the, “first and truest fiction of Kidd”.

Our memory is of HMS Unicorn being moved from the Earl Grey Dock with one of the Tay Ferries or 'Fifies' behind in the 1960's.
The ship was moved from the Earl Grey Dock (where she’d been since 1873) in November 1962 to make way for the new Tay Road Bridge. Do any of our followers remember the move itself, or the old dock area, or the old Tay Ferries/‘Fifies’? ⚓This Friday's featured artefact comes from the Uniforms of the Royal Navy exhibition: Naval Dirk of German U-Boat Captain from the Second World War🇬🇧
Did you know that HMS Unicorn is the ONLY wooden sailing ship to have ever accepted the surrender of a U-Boat?
This golden dirk belonged to German naval officer Karl Jobst who surrendered command of U-2326 to the Naval Officer in Charge at Dundee, based on HMS Unicorn during World War Two.

🎶Whistle While You Work🎶
Today’s sea shanty is Stand by Your Guns (no connection to Tammy Wynette’s country music classic “Stand by Your Man”)⚓ Most likely written by the Irish musician Thomas Carter, Stand by Your Guns gives a romanticised view of what life on a wooden warship would have been like.
The lyrics tell of a Navy crew preparing for battle and really emphasise the bravery of the jolly Jack Tars on board🌟

🔹Royal Naval Reserve Dress Bicorn Hat and Epaulettes🔹

Panel - The Sailor's Alphabet - HMS Unicorn

🎶Whistle While You Work: Music of Maritime Life🎶
Sea shanties were traditionally work songs that would have been sung by sailors while carrying out labour on board ships. A clever and entertaining way of working through shipboard tasks was to sing The Sailor’s Alphabet 🔠 also known as The Old English Chantey🎵
The lyrics follow the 26 letters of the alphabet, with each one mentioning a different part of a ship and describing the action that would take place there⚓️
Follow the link to listen to this unique version of the alphabet👇

03/04/2020

You may wish to know a bit more about the Mars Training Ship. Luckily we have some history on some of its occupants: brothers Anthony and George Kerr.

Poverty was rife in the early 20th century and many boys found themselves sentenced to T.S. Mars due to the harsh surroundings of their upbringing. The brothers lost their father during the Great War and fell into a life of petty crime. It was for this that both boys were sentenced to Mars by Glasgow Sheriff Court.

After his discharge in 1920, Anthony put his woodwork training to good use with employment at a Glasgow sawmill. Later he trained as an apprentice upholsterer in Dundee before, in 1921, deciding to travel the world. At 17 he set sail from Cardiff to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands before arriving in Montevideo, Uruguay. Anthony was last heard of in 1923, when he wrote back to Captain Heathcote, telling him about his new life working at a sawmill in Canada.

George was discharged just five days before Anthony set sail from Cardiff. Like his brother he embarked on a career at sea, beginning as a cabin boy on board the sea barque Sirdal.

George returned to Dundee where he found employment at Camperdown Mill, before enlisting with the Black Watch regiment in 1924. On the outbreak of World War II in 1939, George joined the 106th Light Anti-Aircraft, Royal Artillery regiment. He was captured as a prisoner in 1941, after the defeat of the Allies in the German invasion of Crete and was finally released in 1945.

Where are the details of the childrens painting competition please?
Thank you for this year's biggest Christmas miracle! A while ago my daughter lost her favourite stuffed toy, an adorable little unicorn bought while visiting the HMS Unicorn on our holiday to Scotland. She was of course devastated. I sent a desperate e-mail, and just in time for Christmas a new unicorn arrived in the mail, and my daughter woke up to the most wonderful surprise - it even included a little letter in Norwegian! Thank you so much for your great help, and best wishes for the new year!
I’ve always been fascinated with the Unicorn as I used to pass it on my way to swimming and also could be my Dad was in the navy and I dated a navy guy so just want to wish you all a MERRY Christmas and a HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎊🎊🎉🎉🎼🎵🎶🎹🍺🍺🍺🍺🍷🍷🍷🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇨🇦
for interest, a 3D model of HMS Unicorn by my son Daniel:
My Aunt, Edith Martin was proud to be one of the WRNS on HMS Cressy as the Unicorn used to be known. Sadly, she is no longer with us.
Great night of music with Martin Simpson. Not been on the Unicorn since my dad did security there back in the 80's I think. What a crackin venue for an intimate concert.
