It's time for another Tuesday Tour, and this week we're meeting another member of the Print Studio team.

Katie is an artist and printmaker based in Dundee. She studied Fine Art at DJCAD, and Intermedia Studio Practice at ECA. As well as being a Print Studio Coordinator at DCA, she also works with V&A Dundee leading design workshops for all ages, and is co-founder of Risograph focused publications collective Riso Soup.

Recently, she has been working with Rachel Eulena Williams and Michelle Williams Gamaker on their respective DCA editions.

As well as working on projects with artists as a print specialist, she teaches our Risograph, Zinemaking, and GoccoPro Screen Printing classes. Passionate about visual storytelling, Katie’s work explores stories of connection, folklore, pop culture, and the joy of bright colour. She embraces layering in her works, and enjoys showing this through deliberate misregistration and handmade texture.

Her books and zines are often wordless, telling stories through image and page format alone. Her prints can also be found at DCA Shop.

You can see more of Katie's work by visiting www.katieravenscraig.com.

For this week’s Tuesday Tour, we’re continuing our series of posts that will introduce you to the artists and printmakers that make up the Print Studio team.

This week, we’ll meet Claire McVinnie, a Print Studio coordinator and artist. Claire has been busy creating some fun new classes for the Print Studio to run throughout 2024, all aimed at an introductory level.

Coming up, join Claire on 23 March for Lino, Half Drop Repeat Pattern on Fabric and learn how to create a simple half drop lino panel carved by hand and stamped onto fabric. Later in the year, you can expand your etching knowledge with Soft Ground Etching – Bring a Feather, which will involve preparing a metal plate for etching then applying a soft wax ground to the surface for imprinting a feather onto.

As always Claire has also been busy making her own work and this time it’s a woodcut. "Chubby Princess” is based on Claire’s cat, Pixie, who is always happy to strike a pose 🐾.

This quirky print is currently on show at Frames Gallery – Winter Mixed Show in Perth. “Chubby Princess” has also been selected for Visual Arts Scotland: Centenary Show in RSA Galleries, Edinburgh from February 10th, 2024. The print is an edition of 50 and Claire is hoping for some sales so Pixie can earn her keep 🐈‍⬛.

Hot off the press..Claire has accepted a VACMA award for a very ambitious new etching project. Echo Etching explores the concept of visualising sound using etching plates, salt and sound! We're looking forward to seeing more 🎉.

You can explore Claire's work at www.clairemcvinnie.com, or by and on instagram.

For this week’s Tuesday Tour, we’re beginning of a short series of posts that will introduce you to the artists and printmakers that make up the Print Studio team.

Although a small team in terms of numbers, they are responsible for just about everything that happens in the studio space - whether that be teaching Get Creative course, studio inductions or editioning with exhibiting and visiting artists. Equally importantly, they also make sure that the everyday logistics involved in running the Print Studio are ticking over as smoothly as a Swiss clock, so that our print studio users can happily work on their prints. What a busy team - we appreciate you 🥳!

Without further ado, let’s meet our first Print Studio team member…

Marianne Wilson (Livingstone) is an artist/printmaker based in Dundee. She has an honours degree in Illustration and Printmaking and an MA in Art History. Marianne works as Studio Coordinator at DCA Print Studio, where she teaches workshops, supervises the studio and works with artists to produce editions for the DCA exhibitions programme.

At present Marianne is continuing research into photo etching techniques, and working closely with visiting artists to develop their use of printmaking process as part of their practice. She has been collaborating with the rest of the Print Studio team to bring the letterpress area of the studio into use and will be helping to run a new letterpress course.

Marianne’s own artwork explores the environment through practical and historical research, using techniques such as printmaking, papermaking and installation. Her most recent work travelled all the way to Kyoto to be exhibited at Art Spot Korin as part of a group show curated by Lada Wilson and titled ‘DiscoveRed’. Six artists - all previous exhibitors at 201 Telephone Box Gallery - were asked to explore the colour red and create artwork using linen fabric and mdf panels that were the same size as telephone box windows.

Marianne’s work looked at the specific shade of red used to paint old telephone boxes. She created paper pulp casts, screen printed fabric and laser cut woodblocks from which she printed onto handmade paper. This show came back to WASPS Studios in Dundee as ‘Re(d)turn’ in September 2023. You can see these great pieces included in the images in this tour. Thanks so much Marianne!

As part of her Artist’s Choice screenings, Michelle Williams Gamaker has chosen Bugsy Malone (1976), and we can’t wait to see this in our cinema as a 4K restoration on Sat 10 February, 13:00.

UK film legend Alan Parker’s first feature was this classic gangster musical comedy mash-up featuring a cast of children and killer cream pies. Nearly 40 years on, it remains a standard of the genres, fusing together the best of The Godfather and 42nd Street – but for a family audience.

Each of Williams Gamaker’s selections are preceded by a short video introduction from the artist, giving some context to what the film means to her and her practice.
