STOP LOOK LISTEN

Artists Maella Wallace immersive ‘Glitch’ mural is a nod to her early work in Glasgow and speaks to the urgent and disruptive experience of digital tech.

Wallace’s work surveys the space between contemporary art practice and craft methodology. Her dedication to community and heritage is evident in her aesthetics and processes. was introduced to traditional rug making by her gran whilst the heritage of skill sharing is embedded at the core of her practice.

Wallace has combined the warmth and familiarity of domestic craft with bold graphics, for her she sees this as a celebration of the interconnectedness of people and shared cultural experience through an exploration of personal history, community, craft and contemporary art.

STOP LOOK LISTEN

Artist Maella Wallace immersive ‘Glitch’ mural is a nod to her early work in Glasgow and speaks to the urgent and disruptive experiences of digital tech.

Wallace’s work surveys the space between contemporary art practice and craft methodology. Her dedication to community and heritage is evident in her aesthetics and processes. Introduced to traditional rug making by her gran, she said ‘the heritage of skill sharing is at the very core of my practice.’

Wallace has combined the warmth and familiarity of domestic craft with bold graphics, a celebration of the interconnectedness of people and shared cultural experience. For Wallace this is an honest exploration into personal history, community, craft and contemporary art.

STOP LOOK LISTEN

‘Push button, wait for signal’ is an interactive sculpture comprising of a modified pedestrian crossing push button which captures your image via a hidden camera when pressed and projects your image onto nine plaster cast CRT televisions.

Artist Laurie McInally () cast them in place of using real televisions because she wanted them to be a replica of the original thing - a copy a replica a fake even!

Some form of surveillance overtones often appears within McInally’s work and in this case, the work comments on self-surveillance and overstimulation caused by our digital screen usage. It intends to convey the false sense of reality that comes from the way we curate the online versions of ourselves and the way we want people to perceive us.

The Federation Gallery’s theme this year is ‘Connection of Humankind’ and McInally feels that while we are hugely connected via the Internet and social media, we have somewhat lost connection on a local level. Especially if our screens are negatively impacting our everyday lives.

The sculpture only works through viewer participation as McInally invites you to sit comfortably with a raw version of yourself, disrupting the fast paced culture of our digital age….

Yesterday the gallery was filled with chats and laughs as we shared and introduced all things STOP LOOK LISTEN to our guests.

Thank you to the glorious for hosting a beautiful afternoon together.

Always grateful to our artists & - passionate, gifted, fun, kind, driven and highly spirited, you bring such joy into the space!

Our critical conversation touched on many of their conceptual underpinnings and what drives their practice. We acknowledged the transformative power of art and its role in shaping and reflecting the culture of a community.

'STOP LOOK LISTEN as a cultural expression encourages dialogue and reflection on important social issues, contributing to the enrichment of the communities’ cultural fabric.' ().

The gallery looked gorgeous too. Sharing space to connect and inspire is vital 💜💕

THANK YOU to for the most incredible journey bringing WARM DATA WET HEAP to life.

The show closed on the 23rd September and we took a few weeks to slowly de-install. Carefully removing each piece until all that remained was the Devine Feminine Beast.

I can’t quite express how much this show has shifted my thinking, learning and development. It was an honour!

With gratitude….. 💕💕💕

& held a beautiful women’s circle in the in September. Titled ‘Deviant Women’ we brought 16 women into the gallery had held space together responding to WARM DATA WET HEAP. Exploring movement, breath work we channelled Kali - The Mother Goddess of Time, Change, Creation, Power, Destruction and Death. We listened to talk about her work and shared moments together through conversation.

We welcomed our Deviant Women with herbal tea and ate a delicious vegetarian curry in to celebrate closing the Circle.

Thank you to all our Deviant Women. An abundance of gratitude to Angela & Rachael ( ) for hosting the most magical Women’s Circle with fresh flowers, crystals, joy, laughter and a few tears 💕

"I have created a vivd, chaotic, Utopian world where the visceral, intuitive beast-woman and her effluvia are raised up, thrust up, into the censored, phobic, Appollonian realm. She is put in a position of worship, like Baubo, the Vulvanic Goddess of Obscenity or an Ancient Sheela-Na-Gig. 'Representations of mycelial and bacterial information pathways suffuse everything as women morph into flora or fauna, fresh or composting, elemental and fruity. Personal histories and cosmologies leak through and combine with ecological and feminist body politics, creating characters who, like ‘Warm Data’ offer fresh perspectives on our complex and often confusing relationships with our bodies and all the other life forms with which we share them.' (Rachel Bride Ashton)

Thank you to Alana Baird for the beautiful gallery photography.

Some highlights from the opening of Rachel Ashton Art solo show WARM DATA WET HEAP in the Federation Gallery Keiller Centre Dundee on Saturday. Thank you to everyone who visited and joined us in celebration, we had a fabulous afternoon together.

'This exhibition explores our relationship with the wild, whether that be our inner or outer worlds. It envisions our re-animalisation, blurring the lines between where we stop and the land begins, moving away from the fetishizing of nature.' (Rachel Ashton Art).

Thank you to everyone who helped produce the show and to Creative Scotland for the support.
