To mark the Winter Solstice today, we’re highlighting this richly symbolic work by Thomas Millie Dow (1848 – 1919) from The McManus's Recognised Collection of Fine Art.

Dow was associated with the Glasgow Boys, and like many of them, he turned to Symbolism in the 1890s. 'The Herald of Winter' (1894) is portrayed as a monumental female figure with flowing golden red locks, standing on a rock and blowing a horn to summon the swans that flock around her. In Celtic tradition the swan is an Otherworldly bird, often the disguise of Fairy Women.

At certain times of year it was believed that a swan maiden could transform herself back into a human, such as at the summer and winter solstices. In this watery blue hued painting, Dow conveys his fascination for the Celtic Revival movement - a cultural movement in art and literature that arose in the later 19th and early 20th centuries, partly as a result of new archaeological discoveries being made into Britain and Ireland’s pre-historic past, but also as an antidote to the rapid industrialisation and urbanism that was replacing a more traditional and pastoral way of living.

Do you know what a caique is? Caiques were used for undercover operations in the Mediterranean by the Allies in the second world war– they could often go undetected as they were deemed too small to be of military use.

Caiques are traditional wooden boats of the Mediterranean and used for short journeys, fishing, carrying small amounts of cargo or for transporting people. Regional variations did occur, so that around coasts and islands of the Aegean Sea and the Bosporus a caique was a type of long, narrow rowing b...

We loved having St Leonard's Year 3 pupils visit the team to explore the museum and work on a role models Creative Learning session. We explored the galleries, focusing on learning about historic role models from Dundee's history, including Grace Darling and Winkie the Pigeon! Then in the learning studio, pupils transformed their research into their very own Dundee Newspaper featuring their chosen historical figure!

24/11/2023

208 years ago, the famously courageous lighthouse keeper Grace Darling was born in 1815. Grace was the daughter of William Darling, the keeper of the Longstone lighthouse, off the coast of Northumberland. On the morning of the 7th of September 1838, the Dundee built steamer "Forfarshire”, carrying 63 souls, was struck within sight of the lighthouse where Darling and his daughter Grace determined to try and reach the survivors.

Together with his daughter Grace, who was only 22 years old at the time, they bravely set out to rescue the stranded shipwrecked. In all they rescued 9 survivors clinging to the rock. This portrait completed in 1839, by Thomas Musgrave Joy, was commissioned by Baron Panmure (MP for Forfar) along with a portrait of William Darling and a painting of the Wreck of the Forfarshire to commemorate their heroism. These works are displayed together in our Making of Modern Dundee Gallery.

Grace became a national heroine, receiving many honours and gifts, including £50 from the people of Dundee. She continued to live at the lighthouse with her family but died tragically at the tender age of 26 from tuberculosis.
