How the power of the ice age glaciers transformed Tayside

The dramatic impact of the Ice Age on the local landscape has been revealed in a new video visualisation.

It illustrates how the area that is now Dundee was covered by more than 1km of solid ice.

We are now absolutely delighted to include this video in our Time and Tide exhibition which runs until Sunday 3 October, 2021

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-58514896

A new animation shows how the power of the glaciers 20,000 years ago transformed the Tayside landscape.

This horn and tooth of the now-extinct Celtic shorthorn were found here in Dundee and date to the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age. The Celtic shorthorn was smaller than modern cattle, but probably an ancestor. Both the male and female had horns.

It takes community effort to look after livestock. Cattle were synonymous with wealth in the Iron Age and were moved to fortified enclosures in times of trouble, inculding the fort on Dundee Law.

Over the last 28 years numbers of Dunlin have declined on the Tay. The reasons for this could be a combination of; climate change; loss of roosting and feeding space due to land reclamation; decrease in food as the Tay has become cleaner, or the population simply moving elsewhere.

Not much is known about the Picts, a group of people indigenous to the North and East of Scotland, but they left behind fascinating artwork carved into stones. Curator Christina Donald talks about one of these stones for our Object of the Month.

The Golden Plover spends much of its winter feeding on worms that live under the mud along estuaries. They travel inland during the summer to breed and will mostly feed on insects at this time. These birds are very sociable and can be found in flocks in fields or on the coast. They nest on the ground and the beautiful feather pattern helps to camouflage the birds when they are sitting on the eggs.

We had amazing fun this morning at our celebration event in Baxter Park to mark the finale of our Reconnect project with around 20 participants and families from Home-Start Dundee. There were interactive activities including dance with the fantastic Shaper/Caper and mini-arts activities with our Creative Learning Team. The group have worked together digitally throughout Reconnect, but this was the first time they have all had the chance to meet face to face.

We embarked on the ambitious eight-month remote-learning and engagement project earlier this year to help combat isolation heightened by the current COVID-19 pandemic. 'Reconnect' enabled the museum to continue to provide valuable cultural engagements and experiences for community groups with long-term health conditions and families so they could still benefit from the rich experiences the museum has to offer whilst the museum's doors were closed.

'Reconnect' was made possible thanks to Artfund support and additional funding from That - Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust

10,000 years ago Morton in Fife was a small tidal island linked to the mainland only at low tide. It was used by small groups of people intermittently for over 1000 years. They primarily used two sites, one for making stone tools and the other as a midden for shellfish and animal bones. Windblown sand eventually covered all traces of settlement, and land-locked the promontory so that it is now 4 km from the North Sea. #TimeandTideThursday #ScotlandDigs2021 #Mesolithic

I understand you hold a painting by Solomon J Solomon 1860-1927 called On The Roof, a painting of Mary Solomon at Birchington, Kent. Is there a reason for the museum having this painting? Is there a connection with the area etc.. Thank you.
who can help me. i have this picture in old frame. by the painter Alexander ('Alick') Penrose Forbes Ritchie (1868-1938), Painter. Who can tell me something about this and why is there a Dutch text below? I hope to receive more info and if there is a value attached before he goes to the thrift store.
Is it possible to pop in or do we need to book?

During a discussion regarding a Dundee public house "exclusion" book that was circulated to pubs to show photos and descriptions of miscreants barred from public houses for public order/drunkeness offences this comment was made "I know one came up for auction a few years back so there must be a few around. Mum tried to give it to the museum in the late 90's but at the time they said they couldn't use it as some of the descendants might still be alive.". Now, WHY would the museum not accept it ? They could well have accepted it with an embargo on display. How much other material has been offered and refused for similar reasons? This material is in the public domain and is not in any way defamatory or libelous so why was it refused? Do you still refuse similar offers of material? And because of this stance how much historic material has been lost to Dundee over the years?
We all oved the exhibition and can't wait to go back and read the rest of the comics!
we enjoyed our visit very much yesterday and the tour, thank you. Here is our penguin! #penguininvasion
