🧠Fun Fact Friday🧠

This week we're featuring Henry Moule, another of the artists in our Portraits of Cambridge exhibition.

A Dorset native, Moule was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. His work offers a glimpse into a quieter world, recording places and ways of life that were beginning to change in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Like many of the artists featured in the exhibition, Henry's paintings are more than just beautiful views—they are valuable records of a Cambridge and Cambridgeshire that have largely disappeared.

Come along to the Museum of Cambridge this Monday to learn about the draining of the Fens, the people who fought back and the crafts they tried to keep alive.

In August 1642, Oliver Cromwell, alongside some volunteering locals, seized silver and gold plate from a convoy seeking to fund King Charles I.

Raised locally, and born in Huntingdon, Cromwell had plenty of support from the local people, and met with the newly formed Eastern Association at the Black Bear Inn (now Market Passage) to plan the war effort.

Did you know that Portraits of Cambridge includes a work believed to be by Edward Robert Hughes?

Hughes was a celebrated painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement and was known for his romantic, highly detailed paintings. The work in our collection, Fisher's Lane by the Great Bridge, offers an local connection to one of the most distinctive artistic movements.

Who were the Fen Tigers? 🐅

People have been living off the land in the Fens of East Anglia for thousands of years, but when 'Gentleman Adventurers' began to drain the fens and turn it into arable farmland, locals' lives would be changed forever. 🌾

Some of those fenfolk took matters into their own hands, sabotaging equipment and rioting to try and preserve their way of life. These were the Fen Tigers.
