Step back in time and discover 850 years of farming and life in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Located in an idyllic rural setting close to Cambridge (just off the A10), the Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey is a day out for all the family! Our independent museum tells the 850-year story of farming and life in the Cambridgeshire Fens, with hands-on and interactive exhibits, in addition to being the locati

on of Denny Abbey, the beautiful Former Benedictine monastery which we manage on behalf of English Heritage. The Farmland Museum opened to the public at Denny in 1997. It celebrates the agricultural heritage of Cambridgeshire; and the rural communities, industries and crafts of the area. It is open seasonally from April to the end of October. The Farmland Museum is a registered charity and manages the 12th century Denny Abbey and 14th century Nuns Refectory on behalf of English Heritage. Walnut Tree Cottage is also part of English Heritage's site but is furnished with the museum's collections to recreate a 1940s farm labourer's home.

It's and also the day of our Makers Market.

One of the makers here today is Highfields Honey, and this has got us looking at some of our bee and honey related objects.

The object on the left is of course a hive which is on display on the stone barn but the object on the right is one you may not have seen before. It is a honey extractor which is currently in our stores. Frames from a hive would be placed inside and then would be spun using the handle on top, this would whip the sticky honey off the frame and it would run down the inside to the bottom. The honey could then be poured out of the spout.

The Farmland Museum will be open from 10 am to 4 pm; standard admission applies, with free entry to English Heritage Members, National Art Pass Members and Farmland Museum Annual Pass Holders.

Join us tomorrow for our Denny Abbey Makers Market!

We will be joined by a wonderful group of makers who will be demonstrating their craft and selling their fabulous creations. Come along and meet these talented people!

We will also be running stationary engines throughout the day, and our Docky Box Cafe will be serving delicious treats!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Join us on Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August, for our Makers Market!

We will be showcasing a marvellous group of makers, as well as the makers we've already posted about you can also see Two Brown Owls, Mays Wonderfully Woven, Felt Animals, Neth Stitches, and Old Crow Cards.

We will also have the stationary engines and hand carved whistles made by one of our wonderful volunteers for sale.

Join us on Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August, for our Makers Market!

We will be showcasing a marvellous group of makers, including Blended Monkey Crafts, who create handmade wood-turned and ceramic pieces, some of which you may have seen in our shop before, or at one of the workshops they have hosted here.

As well as their stand, there will be woodturning demonstrations on the pole lathe throughout the day.

Happy International Dog Day. To celebrate we've once again gone into our photo archive to see what photos of our mans best friend we could find.

This photo is of a dog at Lott's Farm, Chittering at some point in the 1940's. Like cats, dog wouldn't have just been pets, they would also have been used around the farm, with their job depending on their breed. Smaller dogs like the one in this photo would mostly have been used to deal with pests.

If you've got a four legged friend of your own, you can bring them with you on your next visit. As long as they stay on lead dogs are welcome across the site.

This we are looking at one of our pieces of machinery the Cambridge Roller.

Although you might expect it to be named after the place it was not. In fact it was named after a person, Mr Cambridge who invented it.

It was used after ploughing to break up large clumps of soil and flatten the land. This would make it easier for weeding and harvesting. It also helped produce better crops as it meant less moisture was lost.

We will be showcasing a marvellous group of makers, including Stitchery, who designs splendid sewn items from bags to brooches to pin cushions. Dawn designs and makes her pieces using a variety of haberdashery techniques and materials in her home studio.

Join us tomorrow (20/08) and Friday (21/08) for Victorian Week at Denny Abbey and the Farmland Museum.

There will be FREE Victorian themed crafts as well as Victorian washday demonstrations at 11 and 1. Come along and have a go yourself at using a dolly peg and a mangle!

The summer holiday activities run on Thursday and Friday each week. The museum is open 10am to 4pm, with last entry at 3.30pm.

Farmland Museum Annual Pass Holders, English Heritage, National Art Pass and Museum Association Members enter free. Farmland Museum tickets are annual passes, so once you have purchased you can return on all days open to the public, including events (with some exceptions)!
