What a joy it was to celebrate Pride and our Museum’s LGBTQIA+ histories with you at our ‘Rock Up and Chill’ event! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
 
Mini-talks throughout the evening highlighted three people in particular from our q***r history.
 
We discussed the life of Jonathan Cutbill, who helped create the world’s first museum digital catalogue at the Sedgwick Museum and who co-founded ‘Gay’s the Word’, the pioneering LGBTQ+ bookshop.
 
We celebrated the life of Anna Gurney, a geologist who collected and studied elephant fossils in Norfolk in the 1800s and who founded a school with her partner, Sarah-Maria Buxton.
 
We shared the epic tale of Franz Nopcsa, a Hungarian aristocrat and pioneering palaeontologist who had a long relationship with his secretary, Bajazid Doda.
 
You honoured all of our tour heroes in your collages which are being collated by environmental artist Kaitlin Ferguson into one artwork to be displayed soon in the Museum. We can’t wait to share that with you!
 
We explored our LGBTQIA+ history further by rummaging through some of our archive materials with our archivist, and we had fun handling and sketching fossils from our collection.

Drop in TODAY to ‘meet’ Mary Anning, the ground-breaking 19th century palaeontologist. ⛏️

Investigate Mary’s fossil finds with her, and find out how some of her most spectacular discoveries came to be in our museum collection.

Step back in time and have fun dressing up as Mary and her brother Joseph.

Fossil handing will finish at 1pm, all other activities will run until 4:30pm.

Our placement student Connor has been busy creating exciting new content for the John Watson Building Stones Collection, as well as QR code labels for the specimens themselves! 🏛️
 
The content includes fascinating stories behind 9 individual specimens, including how Scottish granite is used to make curling stones for the Winter Olympics.
 
Head over to the ‘Explore Collections & Stories’ section of our website or use the link in our Linktree to discover the new content yourself.
 
Keep an eye out for the feedback survey at the bottom of each piece, as your thoughts will help shape Connor’s project report and future content!

Drop in and rock out with us this summer!
 
Meet University of Cambridge Earth scientists and Museum staff and get stuck into hands-on activities relating to their work.
 
Handle real fossils and amazing rocks, and delve into the science of meteorites, volcanoes, microscopic fossils and more.
 
These free, drop-in events will run every Wednesday, in the summer holidays:

Pride doesn’t end in June at the Sedgwick Museum. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
 
Join us on Thursday 30th July for a geological chill-out after-hours as we carry our Pride celebrations into July!
 
There will be many drop-in activities throughout the evening, including:

- mini-tours celebrating the q***r history of the Museum and its collections.

- using the heroes of these tours as inspiration to help create a new artwork for the Museum, collaborating with environmental artist Kaitlin Ferguson.

- relaxed sketching, fossil handling and more!
 
You will be welcomed with a free drink on arrival (wine, beer or soft).
 
This event is free, but a ticket is needed. You can book your free place using the QR code, or by following the link in our bio. Please not that this is for ages 18+.
