The first V-1 flying bomb struck Britain on 13 June 1944.

Nicknamed the "doodlebug" or "buzz bomb", the V-1 was developed by Germany as vengeance weapon (Vergeltungswaffe) in an attempt to terrorise British civilians and undermine morale. The first V-1 struck London at 4:25am on 13 June, just a week after D-Day. It landed in Grove Road in Bow and destroyed a railway bridge and nearby homes. Six people were killed, thirty injured, and 200 were made homeless.

This film was produced for the RAF in July 1944, explaining the V1 - 'the pilotless plane with the explosive head' - and the RAF's efforts to counter them.

No protection, no lights and brutal, freezing conditions.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for today’s Flying Days: D‑Day at IWM Duxford!

Even with the ever‑changeable weather keeping us on our toes, it was fantastic to see flying from the Consolidated PBY Catalina and the L‑4 Grasshopper/Piper Cub formation, a highlight for many visitors.

On the ground, there was plenty to explore too, with engaging displays and open hangars bringing Duxford’s incredible stories to life throughout the day.

During the Falklands Conflict, 28 Sea Harriers flew over 1,100 combat air patrols, downing 20 Argentine aircraft and suffering no losses in air‑to‑air combat. Six Sea Harriers were lost in total, with four lost to accidents and two to ground fire.
