An introduction to the Hawker Hurricane MkII.

This clip comes from a 1941 episode of 'War Pictorial News'. The narrator celebrates the 'Hurry' as an aircraft that can 'climb higher, has a higher top speed and enormously increased firepower'. A subsequent sequence shows the Hurricane being evaluated in flight against a captured German Junkers Ju 88 bomber.

Join retired Squadron Leader Bob Ankerson on Monday 21 September as he recounts his time in the RAF and his experiences in the Gulf War.

Flying as a navigator in Avro Vulcans and then the Panavia Tornado, Bob served in the Gulf War, crewing the Tornado GR1. Whilst flying as part of Operation 'Granby' on 24 January 1991, Bob was forced to eject from his Tornado. He was captured by Iraqi forces and held as a prisoner of war for 40 days.

On this day, 13 August 1940 the Luftwaffe launched Adlertag (Eagle Day), the opening phase of Germany's Battle of Britain.

Over ten hours, German aircraft launched 1,485 sorties against targets across southern England, while RAF Fighter Command responded with 727 sorties.

The attacks were intended to test Britain's air defences, but results were mixed. Several key Luftwaffe targets were missed and Britain's fighter force remained largely intact. Yet the scale of the assault revealed the growing challenge facing those defending Britain's skies.

Last weekend, IWM Duxford welcomed an extraordinary gathering of the people behind one of aviation's most legendary aircraft.

Over two days, thirty pilots, Reconnaissance Systems Officers, ground crew and engineers associated with the SR-71 Blackbird shared their stories, experiences and expertise with visitors from across the UK and beyond. The weekend offered a unique opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of the aircraft's operations, development and record-breaking achievements from those who experienced them first-hand.

From packed talks and informal discussions, to conversations that continued long after the presentations had ended, it was a memorable celebration of one of the most remarkable aircraft ever built.

A huge thank you to our guests from the United States, our visitors, volunteers and staff who helped make Legends of the SR-71 Weekend such a success.
