🏛️ On Sunday, we had the privilege of attending the Chevin Sermon at Great St Mary's – a Cambridge civic tradition stretching back to 1559.

When Richard Chevin died, he left a house to the Corporation with a remarkable condition: that the Mayor appoint someone to preach a sermon twice yearly, in remembrance of his charitable wishes. Over 460 years later, that tradition continues.

Cllr Maria Cleminson, Mayor of Cambridge, invited representatives from her mayoral charities to come along to the sermon! Our Chair of Trustees, Vincent Mak, and Communities & Visitor Engagement Officer, Joanne Hamilton, joined representatives from fellow mayoral charities Abbey in Cambridge and Museum of Cambridge to witness Reverend Nell Whiscombe's Michaelmas sermon.

We are grateful to Cllr Maria Cleminson for championing our work during her time as Mayor, and for the opportunity to participate in this historic and meaningful tradition.

Last Sunday Team Steam represented the museum in the Chariots of Fire Cambridge relay, one of Cambridge's major running events, raising money for the British Heart Foundation. Six runners, 1 hour 31 minutes, and faster than last year. Most of the museum's work is done by volunteers; this week some of them gave a Sunday to another charity as well. Five of them stood still long enough for a photo.

The Museum will be open 10:30am to 2pm tomorrow, 26th September, with last entry being 1pm. This is due to a private hire of the Museum in the afternoon. Sorry for any inconvenience caused - we will be open as normal on Sunday 27th.

Friday 2 October, 10:30–12:30: Toddle into Tech.

A drop-in morning of hands-on science for under-6s: moving pictures, a moving robot, projecting pictures, crafts, and time to plan the next invention. No booking needed. Every activity is included in normal museum entry, and teas and coffees are on us for the grown-ups.

Nearly 400 people came together on Saturday to celebrate what makes Abbey and Chesterton special.

Community Heritage Day was a brilliant celebration of the history, nature, and people of our two riverside wards. From interactive stalls and children's activities to talks about local history and an immersive soundscape evoking the industrial sounds of Cambridge, there was something for everyone.

Walkies with a difference this Friday.

10:30am – Guided Heritage Walk, Jesus Lock to the museum, led by the Cambridge Industrial Archaeology Group. Brewers, boat builders, gas works and the traces they left along the Cam. This brick never travelled far.

Made by the Sturbridge Brick Co. from Cambridge gault clay, at a brickworks approached from Cheddars Lane - a few steps from where the Pumping Station now stands, and where this brick now sits in our collection.

It's also one of the objects visitors can pick up at our object handling sessions. History you can hold, made round the corner.
