Moring everyone. Another absolutely lovely Summer day here at the station. After the short break for volunteers holidays, the station is back open for a full service today. If you prefer shade to sun, we have gazebos up and you can also relax in the natural coolness of the station woodland. We look forward to welcoming you today from 10.

Hi everyone. Half an hour ago we were treated to see this convoy of classic 1960s British Rail diesels ambling north past the station. On the front is 50049 Defiance, followed by 31108, 31210 and 55009 Alycidon at the rear. The 50 is named after the Royal Navy warship and the 55 after a famous racehorse. All are powered by English Electric diesels and are on their way to run in a special gala weekend on the Keithley and Worth Valley heritage railway. Just a reminder that the station is closed tomorrow (Wednesday), back open Thursday and is then closed again until Wednesday 24 June to allow our fabulous volunteers to have a break.

Hi everyone. At lunch time on Wednesday, we treated to seeing a rather special steam locomotive....60007 Sir Nigel Gresley at Wingfield. The engine was returning north after railtour duty at Crewe. The A4 Class engine is named after one of the most famous locomotive engineers in the history of the railways. Sir Nigel Gresley was born on 19 June 1876, so next week is the 150th anniversary of his birth. He was brought up in Netherseal, Derbyshire and went onto become a locomotive engineer and Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London North Eastern Railway. He designed 27 different types of locomotive but his two most well known engines are the Flying Scotsman and Mallard which was and still is the fastest steam locomotive in the World. He sadly died whilst in office during 1941 and is buried at Netherseal church. He was succeeded by Edward Thompson, grandson of our station architect Francis Edward Thompson.

Hi everyone. This morning at just after 8.30, the steam hauled Cathedrals Express from Birmingham to Newcastle sped north through Wingfield. Hauled by Great Western Castle Class locomotive 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumb. The train is pictured approaching Holme Lane Bridge and Wingfield Manor can be seen on its rocky outcrop to the right. The train returns tonight and is due through Wingfield at just after 9pm for anyone who wishes to see it.

Morning everyone. Last night John Abbott one of our station Trustees and Barry Joyce of the delivered a talk on the history and future of Wingfield Manor to the Wirksworth Civic Society. The talk was well attended by over 120 people and a lively discussion occurred at the end; demonstrating just how much interest and passion there is in this wonderful building. On the way back to his car, John Abbott photographed this old cast iron road sign which denotes the route of the ancient Newhaven to Nottingham road which has run past Wingfield Manor for many centuries. A big thank you to the for the invite and donation to Wingfield Station 1947.
