The moving story of life in the "plague village". We look at when it happened, how it spread, and how many people were killed.

Our visitors are often surprised to discover how much the Museum has to offer, often describing it as a "tardis" - seemingly much larger on the inside than on the outside. We have used the space to explain the Eyam Plague story fully, and also to look at plague more widely throughout history. We then look at how the village has changed in the last 350 years, set against the background of the distinctive local geology that shaped Eyam's development.

Find the potion bottles hidden around the museum and figure out which might cure you of the plague....or do more harm than good! 💀

Museum open Tuesdays-Sundays 10 am - 4 pm (last admission 3:30 pm). Half Term activities will run from Sat 24th Oct to Sun 1 Nov 2026.

It's National Poetry Day 📖

This is an image taken from 'The Poetical Works of the Late Richard Furness' a collection by G. Calvert Holland in 1858.

It illustrates 'The Rag-Bag', Furness' longest poem, where a weary traveller's bag of rags all begin to tell the stories of their previous owners...

'Then spoke a Flounce, torn from a lady's gown, Some prude's, coquette's, or woman's of the town : — " Know, I had titles, beauty, rank, and fame, And riches shed a halo round my name ; That rank respect ; —avaunt ! ye servile crew. More manners leam, and keep your distance, do."'

History Extra taking about how the Black Death, plague in the 1300's, impacted England's social hierarchy in a way we are still seeing today.
