We are extremely proud that Cathrine Raben Davidsen is the artist behind the first official painted portrait of H.M. King Frederik X since his accession to the throne.

Last night the 25th of September 2026, the portrait was unveiled in the Great Hall at Frederiksborg Castle, joining the historic series of royal portraits spanning the Glücksburg dynasty—from Christian IX to the present day. With this work, Raben Davidsen makes history as the first female artist to paint an official portrait of a Danish monarch for the Great Hall.

The portrait is the result of two years of dedicated work and a close collaboration between artist and sitter. Throughout the process, King Frederik visited Raben Davidsen’s studio on several occasions to sit for the artist and follow the work as it developed. Through these encounters, the portrait gradually took shape through studies, drawings, photographs and painted sketches.

Cathrine Raben Davidsen (b. 1972) is a prominent Danish contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, drawing, ceramics, textiles and installation. Drawing on art-historical, literary and mythological references, her work is characterized by visual abundance and technical virtuosity, exploring themes of identity, memory, transformation and humanity’s relationship to nature.

The portrait enters a centuries-old tradition of royal portraiture while bringing Raben Davidsen’s distinctive poetic universe into the present. It will be on view at Frederiksborg Castle as part of a special exhibition presenting preparatory material from the creative process, offering a rare insight into how the work took form.

From our hearts, congratulations Cathrine.

Viewing the portrait of King Frederik X is open to the public from this coming Monday, September 28th.
