Celebrating members of the Malagash Community

Today was a very special day at the Rock Salt Cafe. Thank you the Community Hall for organizing and hosting.

We celebrated birthdays today.

Sam Treen, who has turned 99.

He was a driving force, founding member, and the first President of Malagash Hertiage Association. His efforts and dedication have made it possible to preserve our heritage and celebrate our community.

He enjoyed touring the renovated museum and the new large artifacts exhibit. It was great to hear Sam retell the stories of the early days of the museum, the challenges, the rewards, the community spirit. We are so ever thankful for Sam’s contributions.

Charlie Duggan was celebrated and he is 93. Charlie one of the few remaining Malagash miners. His younger brother Peter (91), was also in attendance and is one of the original miners.

A grand day here in magnificent Malagash.

Wellness in the Wilderness Program

Fantastic Malagash Medicine Walks today with Nicole Porter, a Mi’kmaq knowledge keeper from nearby Amlamgog First Nation in Fort Folly, NB. Some of what she shared as we roamed near Blue Sea Beach:
—goldenrod can help with allergies (even though we blame it for causing them)
—Queen Anne’s lace can be used as birth conteol
—wild plantain makes a great salve for mosquito bites.

Many thanks Nicole Porter for teaching us not just about plant uses for humans but about reciprocity with nature and treating it with respect and gratitude, and how you’ve learned from elders.

Thank you for showing us the four sacred medicines and smudging us.

Thank you for the participants for coming out to learn.

Join us at the Malagash Heritage Museum for further Wellness in the Wilderness Events.
