TARTAN DAY in CANADA-APRIL 6
Today we mark Tartan Day where we recognize and celebrate the contributions of the Scots and their descendants in Canada. On October 21, 2010, the Minister of Canadian Heritage officially declared April 6 as Tartan Day. It is celebrated on April 6 because it is the anniversary of the signing of Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, the Scottish declaration of independence. In Canada, the day originated in the late 1980s in Nova Scotia, where it was declared an official day by the provincial government. It then spread across the country, with many provinces joining over the years.
The Nova Scotia Tartan was the first provincial tartan in Canada, and was made an official symbol in 1963. Designed by Mrs. Bessie Murray, it was registered in the books of the Court of the Lord Lyon (the heraldic authority for Scotland) in 1956. Represented in the design are the blue of sea and sky; the dark and light greens of evergreens and deciduous trees characteristic of the province; the white of rocks and coastline surf; the gold of Nova Scotia's Royal Charter; and the red symbolizing the lion rampant on the Nova Scotia crest.

"In March of 1851, Anna’s father took her to Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, for an exhibition ,where she was billed as the “Infant Giantess”. Joseph Howe’s newspaper boasted “this healthy child, 4 years 7 months, was as rosy as a milk maid and weighed over 94 pounds."
