We join the global arts community in reflecting on the life and legacy of Yayoi Kusama, who passed away on August 14 at the age of 97 after a remarkable career spanning more than seven decades. Throughout her life, Kusama created work that expanded the possibilities of contemporary art and invited audiences to consider themes of repetition, selfhood, connection and infinity.

Eva Respini, Interim Co-CEO & Curator at Large, reflects: “Yayoi Kusama's distinctive visual language reshaped contemporary art and influenced the histories of pop art, performance art and minimalism. I had the pleasure of working with Kusama, and her steadfast dedication to her art and messages about love and peace and our connection to one another are inspirational. As Kusama once said, 'Polka dots are a way to infinity.’ That sense of boundless possibility continues to resonate through her art and legacy.”

Sirish Rao, Interim Co-CEO, shared: “Just a few months ago, my daughter and I stood in Yayoi Kusama's Narcissus Garden on Naoshima Island, our reflections scattered across hundreds of gently clinking mirrored spheres, the sky doubled back on itself. Kusama saw the world as dots and infinities, and never stopped looking. Thank you for letting the rest of us feel the infinite too.”

We extend our condolences to Kusama's family, friends, collaborators and the many people around the world who found inspiration, wonder and reflection in her work.

Not your typical still life. This artwork is alive—and it’s changing every day.

Vancouver–based artist Andrew Dadson’s “House Plants” (2017) is a living installation featuring three tropical plants lightly coated in biodegradable, milk-based paint.

Under bright grow lights that mimic sunlight, the plants continue to thrive throughout the exhibition. As each plant grows, the white paint cracks and splinters, allowing green shoots to emerge—a transformation that marks the passage of time and makes visible the process of growth.

“House Plants” is now on view in “Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change” until January 10, 2027.

We live surrounded by things we rarely stop to notice: cables, wires, networks, signals and data.

What happens when an artist asks us to look at them differently?

Vancouver artist Emily Hermant transforms discarded electrical wires and data cables into meticulously crafted works that explore the materiality of communication and the systems that connect us.

Join Hermant for a talk about her practice and her work in the inaugural “Vancouver Now!” exhibition series, followed by a conversation with curator Dr. Richard Hill and an audience Q&A.

Vancouver’s birth and growth as a city coincided with the spread of photography as a new medium. 📷

Photographers such as Edward Curtis travelled to the region, drawn by its natural beauty and—especially in Curtis’s case—a fascination with Indigenous cultures. At the same time, photography thrived in the everyday, with Mattie Gunterman capturing vivid scenes of life during the early 20th-century mining boom in the Kootenays.

As cameras became more portable, photographers like Fred Herzog captured the city, its streets and the lives unfolding across British Columbia. Over time, artists began to do more than document what was in front of the lens. They questioned how photographs shape what we see, remember and understand.

Vancouver artists played a leading role in challenging photography’s conventions and exploring how images construct meaning.

The Vancouver Art Gallery’s collection traces this rich history, from early photographs of the region to Fred Herzog and the Vancouver School, alongside internationally renowned artists including Cindy Sherman, Andreas Gursky and Thomas Ruff.

Congratulations to Vancouver artist Howie Tsui 徐浩恩 on being awarded the prestigious 2026 Hnatyshyn Foundation Mid-Career Award for Excellence in Visual Arts! 🏆✨

This national, peer-recognized award celebrates Canadian artists who demonstrate excellence and innovation in their work and who show promise of outstanding artistic achievement in the years ahead. We’re thrilled to celebrate this well-deserved recognition of Tsui’s practice.

The Gallery has had a long-standing relationship with Tsui, first presenting and touring his solo exhibition “Howie Tsui: Retainers of Anarchy” in 2017. That same year, his work entered the Gallery’s permanent collection. In 2021, he was featured in the group exhibition “Stories that animate us,” which went on to tour across the province.

We’re excited to continue that relationship in 2027, when we’ll present a new video installation by Tsui as part of a forthcoming exhibition drawn from the Gallery’s collection of Hong Kong art and artists.

What does the Gallery’s impact look like in numbers?

From April to June 2026, we welcomed more than 54,750 visitors—our highest admission numbers for this period in three years; presented eight exhibitions featuring 175 artists; and provided nearly 5,800 free visits.

Behind those numbers are exhibitions, education programs, public programs, wellbeing initiatives and community partnerships that create opportunities for people to connect with art and with one another.

Registration is now open for Teen Art Group (TAG), an immersive arts program for youth ages 15 to 18 offered in partnership with Emily Carr University of Art and Design!

Designed to inspire creativity and critical thinking, the program alternates between the Vancouver Art Gallery and ECU, giving participants behind-the-scenes access to exhibitions, artists and curators alongside studio-based learning in a university setting.

Financial support is available for students who identify as Indigenous or who face financial barriers to participation, with four full-tuition scholarships available.
