Join us for a conversation between internationally acclaimed artists Teresita Fernández and Liz Larner, exploring their artistic practices through the interconnected themes of landscape, materiality and our relationship to the natural world.

Moderated by Eva Respini, Co-CEO & Chief Curator, and presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change,” their discussion will consider landscape not simply as a physical environment but as a site shaped by histories, power dynamics, colonialism and resource extraction.

Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery as an initiative of the Centre for Global Asias, the 2026/2027 exhibition line-up includes the largest exhibition of Iranian modernism in Canada; six decades of artistic innovation in Hong Kong; two ambitious moving-image installations from Filipina Canadian artist Stephanie Comilang; and richly detailed paintings by Vancouver artist Manjot Kaur.

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Vancouver artist Stan Douglas reflected on how a visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery changed his perspective on contemporary art.

“His first love was theatre, and he remains a devotee of Samuel Beckett. [...] He couldn’t muster the same enthusiasm for visual art. ‘I thought art was what you saw in art class, which was people doing portraits and flowers,” he says. Then, at a teacher’s urging, he visited the Vancouver Art Gallery to look at contemporary art. ‘It amazed me.’”

Congratulations to Vancouver–based artist Paul Wong, who has been named Canada’s first Parliamentary Visual Artist Laureate! 🎉

Established in 2024, this relatively new role recognizes the vital place of the arts in Canadian public life. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Wong has made significant contributions to visual and media art through an expansive practice encompassing film, video, photography, installation, performance and more.

The Gallery has exhibited Wong’s work on numerous occasions, and he is represented in our permanent collection. Most recently, he has also guest curated the exhibition “Enemy Alien: Tamio Wakayama” (2025) at the Gallery.

Visitors can discover Wong’s 5-channel video installation “In ten sity” (1978) at the Gallery now in “Highlights from the Collection."

Join us in celebrating this important milestone in Wong’s remarkable career and his ongoing contributions to Canada’s arts community!

The Vancouver Art Gallery extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Stephen A. Jarislowsky (1925–2026), a prominent Canadian philanthropist who passed away on October 8, 2026, at the age of 101.

In 1993, Mr. Jarislowsky founded the Jarislowsky Foundation, which champions excellence and ethics in education, medicine, the arts, and the environment and climate change. His support for Canadian art and scholarship includes the establishment of the Smith Jarislowsky Senior Curator of Canadian Art position at the Gallery in 2021, made possible by a $1 million bequest from artist Gordon Smith, matched by a generous $1 million contribution from the Foundation.

Reflecting on his experience working with Mr. Jarislowsky, Richard Hill, the Gallery’s Smith Jarislowsky Senior Curator of Canadian Art, shared:

“When I was honoured to be selected as the Smith Jarislowsky Senior Curator of Canadian Art, I was surprised to learn that my reports to the Jarislowsky Foundation would be attended by Mr. Jarislowsky himself. By the end of our first meeting, I saw it could not have been otherwise. He created the Foundation because he cared about art and culture, and he wanted to be—and remained until our last meeting—a lively, thoughtful part of the conversation. I’m grateful for that. And, of course, for all he’s done to support not only each and every project I have worked on at the Vancouver Art Gallery, but all the other curators and scholars across the country. What a remarkable legacy.”

We extend our sincere condolences to all who are mourning his loss. Through his longstanding commitment to the arts and scholarship, Mr. Jarislowsky helped strengthen Canada’s cultural sector and support generations of artists, curators and scholars.
