FROM THE FRAMING FACTORY - Jungle Edition

THE RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE - Oct. 30th 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire ( now the DRC Democratic Republic of Congo)

60,000 people were in attendance and an estimated one billion ( 1,000,000,000 ) watched the fight on television….considered by many as the Greatest Sporting Event of the 20th Century!

Don King who was Muhammad Ali’s manager wanted to call the event….’ From Slaveship to Championship’ to appeal to the African American audience in the USA but Muhammad Ali referred to the fight as, The Rumble in the Jungle at a press conference and the name stuck. Sorry Don!

This original banner was sold at the fight and our clients father who attended the fight saved it and now we had the pleasure to frame this piece of sports history.
We floated the banner but first removed the wooden dowel and placed along the bottom of the banner ( also original ) , shadow box framed it and used anti-reflection UV protection glass.
I think at one point I actually owned a George Foreman grill!!!!!!!

Lush Georgian Bay landscape paintings by Toronto artist Kim Whitney.
Painted on wood panels in situ, these small works are energetic colour explosions that capture a moment in time of our magnificent Northern landscape here in Canada.
Each panel ( 8.5” x 11.75”) is floated above a linen covered backing with a natural wood frame.

FROM THE FRAMING FACTORY

A little bit of this and little bit of that………

ENJOY YOUR FREE ART……. Banksy (in the style of) - “Enjoy your free Art” Souvenir from Dismaland Aerosol and stencil on cardboard, bears the words “BANKSY IS DISMAL” with stamp from Dismaland. Sold with the entrance ticket to the Dismaland park. Dismaland is a temporary art project that took place during the months of August and September 2015 taking the form of an amusement park. Created by English artist Banksy, it is located in the seaside resort of Weston super-Mare, England.
We framed this piece with a double sided 8 ply mat cut to the exact shape (irregular) of the cardboard so the art would float between the mat boards and the museum glass. Stainless steel pins were mounted into the mats and these pins simply fitted into the corrugated waffle of the cardboard, no actual attachment necessary.
Museum glass, front and back.

Banff, Lake Louise Ski Areas Canadian Rockies via Canadian Pacific ( 1950’s) absolutely original and mint condition poster of downhill skiers by renowned artist Peter Ewart, catalogue #910.
Matted and framed to complement the colours of the poster using Museum Glass for maximum protection from UV damage. Stunner!

Horror classic….Texas chainsaw Massacre original US poster 1974, ED Gein ( the Butcher of Plainfield) inspired theme and nasty nasty crazy stuff going on in this movie….a classic of the slasher genre.
Linen backed, no touchups at owners request, matted and framed UV glass.

If your US poster has a GAU union stamp on the very bottom, you should be able to read it by using a magnifying glass.

FROM THE LINEN BACKING KITCHEN

For Every Fighter a Woman Worker. Care For Her Through the YWCA” was a poster published in WWI to recruit women to the Young Women’s Christian Organization (YWCA).

During WWI, many jobs opened up for women due to men being sent to war.
Women were needed in factories to help provide for the war effort.

The poster shows a woman standing tall while holding a fighter plane and an artillery shell.
This is telling women that the work they are doing is for the good of the country and that they will be honored because of it. In reality, the conditions that many women workers faced were terrible. Working with big machinery, explosives, and poisonous gases was very dangerous and many women did not receive the proper equipment or training to deal with these circumstances. The fatalities and other casualties caused by these conditions were not awarded with medals and were hardly recognized until many years later.

Adolph Treidler, 1918. Treidler was an American artist and illustrator best known for his advertisement work and his propaganda posters.

This poster had many missing areas of paper which we rebuilt after linen backing.

Polish CYRK (circus) poster from 1975…..always humorous, clever, quirky and appealing to a broad audience.
Polish posters are among the best in the world for their graphic design and uniqueness.
Linen backed with minor restoration.

FROM THE LINEN BACKING KITCHEN

We’re going back in time, not back to the future this time!

1917……Oh Please do! Daddy…Buy me a Victory Bond , Canadian War poster by Joseph Ernest Sampson, lithograph. We linen backed this 109 year old poster and had to do some restoration on missing paper that had been eaten away by oil stains.

1917 Buy Victory Bonds….. “In Flanders Fields” was a famous 1915 WWI poem by Canadian Lt.-Col. John McCrae that became a powerful tool for selling Canadian Victory Bonds in 1917–1918. The poem, which symbolized sacrifice and established the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
Linen backed and restored and, WE WILL NEVER FORGET!

1915 …..Boys Come Over Here You’re Wanted! British war poster, 40”x 48”
This type of poster was referred to as a Broadside poster and was published by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in London as poster No. 82

Two large 46” x 63” posters from 1915 by the famous artist, Cappiello.
Le Nil ci******es with famous white elephant….not sure what smoking and elephants have to do with each other……and Pâte Ēclair, cast iron cleaner available, ‘in tubes!’ miraculous as that was in 1915. Great images and stone litho prints.

Walter Peck poster for Mountaineering In The Alps, circa 1937/8
Summer in Italy 1951 by Alfredo Lalia
Dolomiti 1938 by Earnhardt

All posters were linen backed, restored as needed and will be making their way to auction in the US.

FROM THE LINEN BACKING KITCHEN - From 1895 to 1988

In the last years of the 19th century Jules Chéret, a French painter and lithographer became the master of Belle Époque poster art. He has been called the father of the modern poster.
Exquisitely drawn and exquisitely printed, Chéret’s posters captured the ethos in visual form of that era.

Be it wine, spirits, ci******es, bank loans, or where to travel and of course what movies to watch, posters have been there giving a visual form and becoming a lasting historical artifact to all of it.

This selection of posters have all been linen backed with various degrees of restoration…TLC…..guaranteeing their longevity and ability to be enjoyed and remembered for years to come.

The Princess Mononoke poster is an original Japanese B0 format poster measuring at 41” x 57.5” and the SuperFly is a Japanese Tatekan format poster measuring at 20” x 57”……..from our friends

FROM THE FRAMING FACTORY —— DECO ACHILLES PRELIMINARY DESIGN

In this post we are showcasing a ‘mock-up’ or ‘preliminary design’ or ‘cartoon’ of a poster advertising ACHILLES
bicycles from 1932 by the H.D. VOSS

I wasn’t able to find any references or images of an actual vintage poster with this design so it’s very possible that this could be the only remaining art work for this poster design.

The design is steeped in Art Deco tradition with bold graphic elements and simple colour schemes, a marvellous silhouette of a bicycle in black set against a very statuesque facial profile.
The orange text completely bordering the design is familiar to those who know the work of A.M. Cassandra who used this motif often in his classic Deco posters.

You will see in the closeup photos details like the yellow gouache paint that has dried up and is flaking off, the pencil lines /drawing under the paint that the artist used to quickly lay out the text border and the also for the technical drawings of the bicycle.

I took a close up of the blue paint that appears to be air brushed but is actually applied by soaking a stiff bristled paint brush in pigment and then using your fingers to rub the brush and ‘spray’ the paint, creating a splatter effect reminiscent of using an air brush.

All in all a fascinating historical work that was designed to scale ( the poster is 29” x 43”) and to my knowledge never produced.

We float framed this work in a clear pine wood frame using Anti-reflection 80%UV protection glass.

FROM THE LINEN BACKING KITCHEN - TRAVELLING DAYS!

A client brought in dozens upon dozens of original travel posters for us to linen back and restore…..some small, some large, some European, some Canadian……most were in quite rough condition, tears, creasing, missing paper, tape staining, massive amounts of masking tape, scotch tape, paper packing tape…..dirty! Hell yeah, I’ll show you the water from one poster alone after I finished washing it. ( the smaller pail is the water after I washed the French Cathedral poster)

For me personally and professionally the most exciting are the Canadian Pacific travel posters from the 1930’s and 40’s.

Not only are these posters some of the graphically most beautiful posters ever produced, they were incredibly well printed, many using an oil based serigraph or silk screen printing technique, others stone lithography.

In this post I will show you some before and after photos which I usually don’t do but I know many people enjoy seeing them just to appreciate how restoration can make a world of difference.
You generally don’t get to see the long and painstaking retouching and in-painting part of restoration which for some of these posters took up to three hours of work.

I hope you enjoy……it was a marvellous treat for me to have an opportunity to work on these Canadian Pacific posters, super super rare and such magnificent historical posters.

FROM THE LINEN BACKING KITCHEN - Across Canada and to go where no man (or woman) has gone before!

This week’s linen backing and restoration selection comes to us from our friends @ vinatgehorro and a private collector.

Yes, all of these posters are original, the print of the woman with a flute dates back to 1899 by the artist, Paul Berthon, the Canadian Pacific posters are from 1947 ( Across Canada ) the train poster and uncertain date for the Mt. Robson but very likely 30’s to 40’s as well.

The movie posters range from 1938 (Murdered Woman) to 1981 (American Werewolf in London) and are all from our friends

We send a shout out and Happy Birthday to the incomparable William Shatner who turned 95 this 22nd day of March 2026 and a, what the hell dude!…..riding horses and falling and injuring yourself a couple of months ago….Captain Kirk just doesn’t know when to stop….to boldly go…….another great Canuck!

FROM THE VAULTS OF THE TWO TOWERS TO THE WALLS OF YOUR THEATRE ROOMS!

Lord Of The Rings…Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas, Bilbo, Pippin and Samwise Gamgee…..and Isildur’s Bane, The Ruling Ring, My Precious, or Ash Nazg.

Here at DKARTSERVICES we have an incredibly rare opportunity for those of you who are fans, devotees, enthusiasts, of Tolkein’s magical masterpiece.

These are the original vinyl banners that were produced in 2001 and 2002 for the travelling exhibitions The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the ring, and……..The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, The Exhibit.

Both of these exhibitions were in Toronto and as part of the promotional campaign these large vinyl street banners were produced in an extremely limited number to be hung from street poles during the run of the exhibit.
Make no mistake these are the real deal that we were able to source and we guarantee them to be 100% authentic.

Each banner is 29” wide by 83” long. These banners we have were never used…meaning they didn’t get sewn and grommeted and displayed outdoors….therefore they are MINT! No fading, no damage, these were a few of the banners that were extras and never used! Unbelievable that they even exist!

Each banner is $1,000.00 CAD and I have a couple of copies of each one and once they are gone….they are gone never to be seen again!

There’s a company in the US called Betterwall.com that sells banners from museum exhibitions but theirs are all used and damaged and they still charge from $300-700USD.

Rare,rare,rare….LOTR,LOTR,LOTR…….once gone, never again! My PRECIOUS!
