Preserving Canadian History: A Tradition of Craftsmanship in Port Credit
As a master picture framer, every piece that enters Pazan Gallery carries a profound story. Some days, those stories belong to a family’s personal lineage; other days, they form the bedrock of Canadian history. The daily privilege and challenge of preserving these fragile moments is why I have dedicated my life to this master craft since 1988, and why I have proudly served our Port Credit community since 2010.
A local client recently entrusted us with a remarkably fragile, tightly coiled panoramic photograph from 1934. The historical inscription across the bottom captures a monumental moment:
"4th Battery C.F.A. Old Boys Association Reunion with Guests from 51st Batt. C.F.A. (Langevin) Corps Reunion Toronto August 4th 1934."
Her grandfather was seated among those men. Her goal was elegant and clear: she wanted to see his face clearly again—to safely unroll and flatten the photograph without incurring the expense of a full digital restoration.
Working with antique paper is a delicate science that demands patience and decades of intuition. Old paper fibers carry a memory of their own. To safely relax 92 years of tension in this rolled scroll, I carefully introduced controlled moisture over time before submerging the piece in a specialized water bath to gently wash out decades of impurities. Once the paper became supple and malleable, I used specialized rubber rollers, plastic, and wooden tools to gradually work out the deep creases without cracking the surface. Once stabilized, it was dry-mounted securely onto a heavy, double-thick, acid-free archival board to ensure it remains flat and protected for generations to come.
