UPCOMING EXHIBITION | Darcie Bernhardt: From the Peel to the Arctic Ocean 🌠

We are proud to announce the latest solo exhibition of contemporary visual artist Darcie Bernhardt ().

Please join us at 6pm on June 4th for the exhibition opening, and artist talk featuring the artist in conversation with John Geoghegan, Associate Curator, Collections and Research at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection ().

About the artist:
Bernhardt is an Inuvialuk/Gwichin artist from Tuktuyaaqtuuq, NT, alumna of NSCADU in 2019 (BFA). Primarily focused on the narrative of domestic life in the North, Bernhardt’s works are based on memories and photographs from home. Bernhardt’s reimagining of their Northern memories functions as an act of reclamation and preservation, establishing their role as a memory-keeper. Expanses of negative space convey the ephemeral and ever-changing quality of one’s memory, as they transmit from one generation to the next.

Last week, Patricia Feheley joined an incredible lineup of voices at the University Club of Toronto for the panel discussion, "Inuit Art: Its History and Contemporary Interventions."

Moderated by Katlin Rogers of Rogers Art Advisory, the conversation featured insightful perspectives from Emily Laurent Henderson, Jenna Ferrey, and Mark Bennett. We were honoured to be included in such a vital and timely dialogue on the evolution of Inuit art.

Now on view at the gallery: ‘Ulukhaktok’

We are pleased to present a selection of prints from Ulukhaktok (Holman Island), a small community on Victoria Island in the Inuvialuit region of Canada’s Northwest Territories. Printmaking in Ulukhaktok began in the mid-1960s through the Ulukhaktok Co-operative, with its first official collection released in 1965.

This exhibition brings together works by celebrated artists including Helen Kalvak, Mark Emerak, and Peter Aliknak, among others. Spanning the years 1968 to 1987, the collection captures the Co-operative’s most active and prolific period, offering a vivid glimpse into a defining era of artistic production in the North.

🗓️ Exhibition on view until May 9th.

We’re pleased to announce our latest exhibition ‘Arnaqu Ashevak: A Retrospective’ will be extended to Saturday, April 11th.

Arnaqu Ashevak (1956-2009) was at the vanguard of a younger generation of Inuit artists who pushed the boundaries of art making and successfully crossed over into the contemporary art scene. His untimely death in 2009, at the height of his career, left many art enthusiasts today unaware of this extraordinary artist who was far ahead of his time. Influenced both by global culture and international artists, his profound, whimsical, and innovative artistic voice transcended cultural limits, creating poignant social commentaries on the human condition.

This exhibition highlights a curated collection of works on paper and sculpture from 1994 to 2008, celebrating Ashevak’s wide range of interests, his mastery of varied media, and his fearless experimentation.
