🌟 NOTABLE SALE 🌟

𝘚𝘵. 𝘑𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘩'𝘴 𝘖𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭, circa 1930 is a defining achievement by Kathleen Moir Morris. Morris painted a view towards St. Joseph’s Oratory, looking south across Queen Mary Road. Morris’s characteristic earthy colours are punctuated by the vibrant red sleigh, and the child’s red toque.

In 1976, Galerie Walter Klinkhoff honoured Kathleen Morris with a non-selling retrospective exhibition. The Montreal Gazette’s coverage of the exhibition included a photograph of Morris inspecting the paintings, a photograph we cherish, and beside that was reproduced an image of the 𝘚𝘵. 𝘑𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘩'𝘴 𝘖𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 (incorrectly dated 1939).

🌟 VENTE NOTABLE 🌟

𝘚𝘵. 𝘑𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘩'𝘴 𝘖𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭, vers 1930 est l'une des œuvres phares de Kathleen Moir Morris. Morris peint une vue en direction de l'Oratoire Saint-Joseph, regardant vers le sud depuis la rue Queen Mary. Les couleurs terreuses caractéristiques de Morris sont rehaussées par le rouge vif du traîneau et de la tuque de l'enfant.

En 1976, la Galerie Walter Klinkhoff a rendu hommage à Kathleen Morris en lui consacrant une exposition rétrospective non commerciale. Dans sa couverture de l'exposition, le Montreal Gazette, publia une photographie de Morris examinant les tableaux, une image qui nous est chère, et à côté de celle-ci figurait une reproduction de l'Oratoire Saint-Joseph, Montréal (datée par erreur 1939).

Jacques Payette’s composition can be read as a meditation on art history itself: the persistence of classical form (through costume and drapery) set against its modern reinterpretation in Picasso’s portrait of Marie-Thérèse.

The draped female figure, a studio prop with a high-waisted, empire-style silhouette with heavy folds falling in long vertical cascades, relates closely to the language of antique statuary and draws on a late-18th/early-19th-century neoclassical mode of dress.

It is Molly’s paintings of crowds for which she is most famous. Bobak sees these events as aesthetic experiences. She is fascinated by the dynamic nature of a crowd which is never the same from one moment to another. She is preoccupied with giving order to the sense of perpetual movement and change.

𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘆, 𝘉𝘶𝘴 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱
Bus Stop (1982) captures a surreal stillness of everyday life on a winter morning along a residential street in Montreal. A young woman waits at the bus stop beneath a sign marked “19 — 82,” Surrey’s indication of the year of the painting. Elsewhere there are a few pedestrians, each walking alone. The bare winter trees recede into the distance.The traffic light, the winter coats, the taxi serve to guide the eye. Is that a cameo appearance of the artist standing toward the centre of his composition?

The subject of Craig Street, now called St. Antoine Street, locates the composition just east of Victoria Square. Morris describes her urban narrative with thick and aggressive brushwork in a warm palette of yellow, ochres, browns and blue and a contrast of cool whites of the snow. Her buildings are simplified forms and boldly outlined, characteristic of the Beaver Hall Group artists.
