Call for participation! | Appel à participation

As part of FOFA's upcoming summer exhibition, 𝘓𝘦𝘵 𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘹 𝘙𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘹, curated by Juliana Driever and Amber Berson, we are launching two paid calls for participation:

⟡ Casting call for three pregnant actors (non-union) for a performance artwork with theater duo Rachel Kauder Nalebuff and Caitlin Ryan O’Connell: "a staged reading of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘴, a performance that explores pregnancy, friendship, mysticism, exhaustion, and solidarity." Please complete the form on our Linktree by June 1 if you would like to audition.

⟡ Call for participation in the performance 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘙𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘦 by Dillon de Give: "seeking parents and caregivers of young children to make their private bedtime routine public in a way of their choosing." Accessibility Day at FOFA Gallery | Journée de l'accessibilité à la Galerie FOFA

As part of our Accessibility Project running alongside the spring exhibitions, we invite you to a full afternoon of programming centring Deaf, blind, and low-vision audiences, with ASL and LSQ interpretation across for both anglophone and francophone signing communities. We will also provide braille texts (ENG & FR), tactile sculptural elements, and audio capsules (ENG).

Programming for Thursday, May 21st:
⟡ 1–2 p.m. — Guided tour with Sendy-Loo Emmanuel
⟡ 3–4 p.m. — Guided tour with Sendy-Loo Emmanuel (with ASL/LSQ interpretation)
⟡ 5–6 p.m. — Conversation: Po B. K. Lomami x eunice bélidor (with ASL/LSQ interpretation), and the launch of Esse arts + opinions Issue 117: Crip/handi. Congolese snacks will be provided.

👉 Conversation: Tina Lam x Regan Ross 👀

The FOFA Gallery is hosting an interdisciplinary conversation between artist Tina Lam and physicist Regan Ross in the context of the current exhibition …𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘮 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦.

Moving between art and science, Tina and Regan will discuss how their work is shaped by neutrinos—the mysterious, invisible subatomic particles that surround us at every moment—and how their different practices reach toward what exists at the edges of perception.

Dans le cadre de notre projet d'accessibilité qui se déroule en parallèle des expositions de printemps, la Galerie FOFA présente une conversation entre l'artiste Tina Lam et le physicien Regan Ross, qui s'inscrit dans le cadre de l'exposition actuelle …𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘴𝘮𝘰𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘮 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦.

Naviguant entre l'art et la science, Tina et Regan discuteront de la façon dont leur travail est façonné par les neutrinos — ces mystérieuses particules subatomiques invisibles qui nous entourent à chaque instant — et de la manière dont leurs pratiques respectives s'approchent de ce qui existe aux confins de la perception.

Black Arts Series Filmmaker Spotlight ✧

SYNOPSIS 
Sirius, a lone star in the form of a dark-skinned man, has collapsed to earth. What little space he found on his host planet, he works to provide food and shelter. He and his wife, Angèle. One winter’s day, the firmament calls him back, Sirius takes the long way leaving his wife behind. Their journey tells of the fertility of this sojourn for Sirius. The story that’s often overlooked that of how the earth fed the sky. » 
 
BIO  
Jean-Bastien Niyigaruye, originally from Burundi, lives in Montreal (Tiohtià:ke). Working mainly in the visual arts, he recently embarked on the adventure of cinema as a director and a scriptwriter. For him, cinema is a continuation of his interest in drawing, painting and sculpture. As in these other media, Jean-Bastien seeks to construct and deconstruct images to create a free space for language and, ideally, to bring us closer to one another.

SYNOPSIS 
Sirius, une étoile solitaire prenant la forme d’un homme à la peau foncée, s’est effondrée sur terre. Dans le peu d’espace qu’il a trouvé sur sa planète d’accueil, il s’efforce de fournir de la nourriture et de l’abri. Lui et sa femme, Angèle. Un jour d’hiver, le firmament le rappelle, Sirius prend le long chemin qui mène au ciel en laissant sa femme derrière. Leur trajet raconte la fertilité qu’ont été ce séjour et cette idylle pour Sirius. L’histoire souvent méconnue, celle de la façon dont la Terre a nourri le ciel.

SYNOPSIS 
Amelia, fighting for her q***r husband and the future of their family, must face the reality that she may ultimately be fighting a losing battle on all fronts.   
 
BIO  
Badewa Ajibade is a Nigerian film artist-researcher based in Montreal (Tiohtià:ke), Canada. Badewa was initially trained in filmmaking at the Toronto Film School in Toronto (Tkaronto), Canada. He holds an MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in film production from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, where he researched loss, the subconscious, and variations in African q***r sexuality. He is currently a PhD research-creation student in the Humanities program at Concordia University, studying the reclamation of q***r Black bodies through dance and immersive cinema. He has written, directed and produced 6 short films in addition to a feature documentary. His work has been screened around the world and has earned him recognition, including three major awards at film festivals.

Aphantasia

SYNOPSIS 
The Image Machine, a supercomputer, aims to bring an end to humanity through a computer virus called Aphantasia. Once the Apple Test is completed, a person’s individuality will be erased, turning them into mindless and soulless beings that will later be deleted from reality.   
 
BIO 
Yves Lazarre is a Haitian-Canadian filmmaker based in Montreal (Tiohtià:ke). His films exist between documentary observation and fictional construction, drawing from experimental film traditions. Raised around storytellers, he is interested in how stories are constructed, their metaphorical illustrations and what they reveal about existence, time, space and identity. His background in found footage has allowed him to develop and refine his skills in editing and sound design, which are often the foundation of his films.

La Machine à Images, un superordinateur, cherche à mettre fin à l’humanité à l’aide d’un virus informatique appelé « Aphantasia ». Une fois le test Apple terminé, l’individualité d’une personne est effacée, la transformant en un être sans esprit ni âme, qui sera ensuite supprimé de la réalité.

SYNOPSIS 
Told by 2SLGBTQ+ Afro-Indigenous community leaders, this short documentary reimagines Black and Indigenous solidarity in Canada through the lenses of social justice, radical kinship, and joy. 
 
 
BIOS 
Isak Vaillancourt, the director, is an award-winning director, producer, and multidisciplinary artist of Somali-French ancestry. His creative practice spans filmmaking, photography, and arts-based programming, exploring identity through the lens of Black healing, memory, and decolonization. He is the director and producer of the short films Amplify (2020), Collective Resistance (2023), and Can You Feel It Now? (2025). 
 
Ra’anaa Yaminah Ekundayo, the producer, is a Tiohtià:ke (Montreal, QC)-based emerging multimedia visual activist scholar whose work explores the intersection of art and activism, particularly the entanglement of Black identity, community, and futurity. Co-founder and Chair of Black Lives Matter Sudbury, they are a Black q***r cultural curator with a master’s in architecture and are currently pursuing a SSHRC-funded PhD in art history at Concordia University.
