Depuis sa création en 1972, OPTICA œuvre à la promotion de l’art contemporain et participe au rayonnement de Montréal sur la scène nationale et internationale. Il présente annuellement un programme varié d’expositions – s’investissant par ailleurs dans la recherche et la production de commissariats – ainsi que des colloques et des activités d’interprétation pour le public. L’ensemble de ces progra
mmes propose une réflexion critique sur l’actualité de l’art et stimule la création d’œuvres nouvelles, mandats soutenus par une activité éditoriale rigoureuse. Nouvellement localisé dans le Mile End, OPTICA est doté d’une salle de documentation et de recherche. Cet espace de médiation, l’AGORA, sert de lieu de rencontres publiques afin de favoriser les échanges liés aux expositions, aux résidences et aux projets spontanés avec la communauté. Il offre également des ateliers en milieu scolaire. OPTICA reçoit les propositions de projets chaque année. Les dossiers d’artistes et de commissaires sont évalués par le comité de programmation d'OPTICA. Les projets d’artiste et de commissaire inscrits à la programmation reçoivent l’assistance technique nécessaire à leur réalisation, de la part d’un personnel qualifié. Le centre procède aussi par invitation afin de rester à l’affût des tendances novatrices en art contemporain et de s’accorder une souplesse d’action. Les expositions montées sous le commissariat du centre font par ailleurs l’objet d’appels à candidature axés sur la commande et donnent lieu à des ouvrages collectifs qui mettent en valeur la multiplicité des approches. En 1992, OPTICA s’est doté d’un fonds d’archives, administré par l’Université Concordia, qui répertorie les activités du centre depuis sa fondation. À l’international, OPTICA s’est distingué par des commissariats d’exposition en Europe et aux États-Unis, de même que par sa participation à la foire d’art Artforum Berlin.

Since its foundation in 1972, OPTICA has engaged in promoting contemporary art and raising the profile of Montreal on the national and international arts scenes. Every year, OPTICA presents a varied program of exhibitions, symposia, school-based workshops and encounters with the public, while investing in curated exhibitions based on themes developed and researched at the centre. In partnership with art3 (Valence, France), OPTICA's residency program encourages the development of emerging practices. All these activities support critical reflection on current issues in art and stimulate the creation of new works, sustained and accompanied by the production of relevant publications. OPTICA's new location in Montreal's Mile End neighbourhood includes a documentation centre and a space for dialogue and exchange, the AGORA, which serves as a forum for encounters with the public, promoting exchange and dialogue on its exhibition, residencies and community projects. Proposal are received annually. Proposals from artists and curators are assessed by the OPTICA programming committee. The centre also proceeds by invitation in order to remain flexible and current. Occasionally, the centre puts out thematic calls to curate exhibitions that group works featuring a variety of approaches. Created in 1992, the OPTICA Archives are administered by Concordia University Archives. They consist of documents related to the centre’s programming activities since its founding. Internationally, OPTICA has distinguished itself with curatorial projects in Europe and the United States, as well as through its participation at the Art Forum Berlin international fair.
