We live in a community renowned for its natural beauty, waterfront, friendly people, arts, history and festivals! We invite all residents to discover our Central Vancouver Island communities of Ladysmith, Cassidy, Cedar, South Nanaimo, Saltair and Chemainus. The annual Hometown Tourist weekend offers locals an opportunity to discover some of the special attractions and shops and services in their own hometown. Often we overlook the treasures that are in our community. This campaign serves to remind us of the wonders that are literally in our backyard. Grab your camera and get ready to play tourist in your hometown. Amazing things happen in a small town! All aboard! I took VIA Rail Business Class from Ottawa to Toronto Union Station, and it took most of the day, which suited me fine.
The newer trains are bright, modern and built for this corridor. Business Class has a roomy 2x1 seat layout with extra legroom and leather seats, and the meal is served right at your seat. The food was tasty, the w**e was good and free flowing, and I finally got to read my book without interruption.
The only downer: I left my prescription sunglasses behind. I contacted lost and found, but they never turned up. Lesson learned! Double-check your seat before you step off the train. And maybe not drink that much? Nah!
Would I do it again? I’m aboard for that!
Now I wish Vancouver Island would get the rails running again!

Grateful for our local farmers' markets this Thanksgiving.
Fresh food, friendly faces, lots of puppies to pet, and the chance to meet the people who grow and make what's on our tables. Thank you to all the Mid-Island farmers and makers who feed our community!

Lost in the best way: McNab's Corn Maze
After a couple of seasons away, the Yellow Point favourite has reopened! We took the wagon ride out, said hello to the farm animals, browsed the produce stand, checked out the fire pits, and admired the pumpkins. Then came the star of the show: the 7-acre corn maze. It’s just confusing enough to keep you laughing and guessing.
Another reason to love the Mid-Island. Go support local this fall.
