Intro to Saggar Firing đ„
A 2-day handbuilding & experimental firing workshop with Jasmine Rose and Kat Hammick
Join us for a hands-on introduction to saggar firing, a low-fire reduction process using smoke, carbon, minerals, and organic materials to create one-of-a-kind surfaces!
In session 1, you will have the opportunity to create your own piece to saggar fire using handbuilding techniques, and will learn how to prepare your piece for the firing in session 2.
In session 2, you will load up your saggar with your combustibles if choice! Think seaweed, wood shavings, even banana peels! Get creative and experiment, this is all about discovery!
Following the firing, we will gather to unload the kiln, open the saggars to reveal the pieces inside, and share with fellow participants! The results are often unpredictable and unloading is part of the experience!
This is an opportunity to explore surface, atmosphere, and chance through a relatively simple firing process. The materials and conditions inside each saggar interact in their own way, so every piece will be different.
