Join Us Tonight For ViewPoint Gallery’s Next Community Photowalk!

Looking for an exciting way to spend your Saturday evening?

Join ViewPoint Gallery as we hit downtown Halifax for the lights and excitement of Nocturne: Art At Night. As blue hour bleeds into twilight, we'll explore a variety of contemporary art projects, installations, and performances across 80 public spaces in downtown Halifax. This is the perfect opportunity for those who are interested in exploring night photography.

All skill levels and camera types are welcome to attend this free event. -- whether you're a beginner or a pro, who shoots digital, analogue, or even on your phone.

There’s no strict itinerary; we’ll just see where our cameras take us, and then meet up afterwards to share photos and experiences.

Don't forget comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle, and plenty of space on your memory card (or extra rolls of film).

The Details:

* When: Saturday, October 17th from 6pm until roughly 8pm
* Where: Meeting at the entrance to the Halifax Central Library at 5440 Spring Garden Rd, Halifax.
* How to find us: Just look for the crowd with cameras!
No registration required—just show up. All are welcome!

We are delighted to present this exciting new exhibition, Interface, featuring new works by three fascinating Nova Scotian artists: Arnaud Béghin ,Greg Coldwell, and Heather Rose. We chose the title Interface to reflect the contrast that exists in these works between the tactile and the mechanical, the organic and the inorganic, the industrial and the pastoral, and the digital and the analog. There are many things to see in the world, and many ways to see those things, as the work in this exhibition clearly demonstrates.

ViewPoint is proud to present our International Photography Competition winner for October 2026: "Rocky Mountains on Wetplate Collodion #2" by Bill Hao (Canada - IG: .bill )

Artist Statement:�

I have photographed the Rocky Mountains hundreds of times over the past decade. I observed how the landscape changes, how beautiful natural features disappear. My collodion glass plate may last for two hundred years, but some landscapes may not. They are disappearing and face severe damage from wildfires, melting glaciers, and tourism pressures. Athabasca Glacier has retreated 1.5 kilometres in the past century. Jasper National Park closed due to wildfire damage. In July 2024, the largest wildfire in a century destroyed half of the town of Jasper and 32,000
hectares of forest.

The Wetplate Collodion Process was invented in the 1850s. It is direct photography by camera; the negative on glass is the final work. It can’t be enlarged or printed, so the final image is unique.

I want to use one of the oldest forms of photography to warn the world to protect the precious natural environment.

Biography:

Bill Hao made an Ultra Large Format Camera (32X48inch) that uses the Wetplate Collodion Process. He presently uses a very old Goerz Red Dot Artar 47.5-inch lens.

He converted a 50-seat tour bus into an off-grid mobile darkroom because this process requires immediate development after exposure. It should be noted here that he is not creating a typical photo by current standards. These aren’t jpegs, they’re not even negatives on film. They are a solid, transparent glass plate the same size as the camera.

The Wetplate Collodion Process was invented in the 1850s. It is direct photography by camera; the negative on glass is the final work. It appears as a positive when displayed with a dark backing surface. It can’t be enlarged or printed, so the final image is unique. A larger negative would need a larger camera.

It is very difficult to get details of the sky and clouds because of the characteristics of the Wetplate Collodion technology, but Bill is able to do so. However, most wet plate photographs you see on the Internet lack details of the sky and clouds.

Price: $500 (However, if someone wishes to purchase my original 20x24 inch glass plate work, which is unique, the price is CAD $10,000, and I can provide a frame, sturdy packaging, and free shipping)

Join us this October for the return of our Black & White: A Members' Group Exhibition.

As Nova Scotia moves from Summer to Fall, a group of gallery members presents an exploration of the tradition of black-and-white photography, which dates back to the origins of the medium in 1827.

In addition to our main exhibit, we also have our Featured Member exhibit of Chris Kelly's A SCOTTISH JOURNEY. Experience the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland through a collection of images captured while visiting some of the country's most celebrated locations. A Scottish Journey is a visual travelogue of rugged scenery, rich history, and unforgettable moments.

For our Fresh Eyes Exhibit this month, we have the Maritime Analog Photography Society. Nothing Special / Everything Real is the first exhibit of the Maritime Analog Photography Society featuring diverse images from four Nova Scotians.

The show explores photography beyond the conventional camera, the image as a truthful, social or philosophical record of the world around us, as well as the inherent magic and unexpected surprise of the medium.

Join us on Thursday, October 1st from 6-8pm for our opening reception.

The show runs from Thursday, October 1st through Sunday, November 1st.
