ViewPoint is proud to present our International Photography Competition winner for September 2026: "In Bygone Times" by Jacques Giard (Canada, IG: .giard.58)
Artist Statement:
There were few visitors at the museum leaving us with abundant time to talk, which we did for nearly an hour. He once worked as a cooper in the Annapolis Valley at a time when wooden barrels were needed for the apple industry. But times had changed. Barrels were no longer needed. Nevertheless, he was proud of his skills as a cooper and was pleased that he could now ply his trade at a local museum. His skills were extensive and to be admired but it was his stories of times gone by that resonated with me. As he spoke I discreetly let my camera do its thing.
Biography:
My working life has always been involved in creating. I spent most of it in product design and development, both in the profession and in academia. Over those years, I had the opportunity to travel and live in several parts of the world, always with a camera at hand. Photography was relevant to me then but it very much resided in the background. It was not front and centre. Since retiring the situation has very much changed. Photography has never been more relevant and has come to play a central role in defining who I am. I now identify as a nature photographer, one who seeks out the visual beauty in nature and in people. No one genre of photography defines me. Occasionally I’ve been known to patiently wait for the ideal capture of an elusive bird or animal but given a choice my preference remains landscape photography.
