Hermes is an artist co-operative located in the North end of Halifax, near the corner of Agricola and North Street. We represent both new and established artists with a wide range of work. Founded by Emily Jones in 2013, Hermes has recently evolved into a new model, managed by Peter Dykhuis, Eryn Foster, and Katie Belcher, each experienced arts administrators with active artistic practices.

Exploring themes of identity, I am. I was. is a collection of works that explore Jones’ early aspirations to feel safe, secure and respected by developing the physique and abilities of comic book characters and the ‘80s/’90s action stars who personified them through a specific performance of masculinity.

I am. I was. asks the viewer to consider who we are when something that we have made a core part of our identity no longer serves us.

Leah Garnett Leah Garnett continues her residency at Hermes this week! She will have public hours 12-6pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday if you’d like to stop by and see what she’s drawing.

If you can’t make it this wee she’ll also have public hours 12-6 on Saturday July 25 and Sunday July 26 with an informal closing reception at 3pm on the 26th.

Leah Garnett Leah Garnett is using the Hermes space for a studio residency until July 26th. She is working on some drawing and ideas for a future installation.

Leah will have public hours this coming weekend from 2-6pm on Saturday July 11 and Sunday July 12 if you’d like to seethe early stages of what she’s working on. Leah will also have public hours later in her residency, so check back again for future times!

This past month, Eryn Foster Art Stuff has been using HERMES as a laboratory for thinking, making, doing, working, and creating new drawings, collages, prints and constructed works on paper. She’s also been chatting with other artists and passersby about the meaning of life, salami and the incredible life’s work of David Hockney.

If you would like to join in the conversation or see what she has been up to in the gallery, you can drop by HERMES and visit her during open-hours this week (June 16-20th).

Or better yet, come and join her for a modestly catered reception happening this Saturday from 2-5pm.

Tallows. Smoke Points. Letdowns. By Sally Wolchyn-Raab. April 18-May 17, reception and artist talk from 3-6PM April 18.

Lithography relies on fat: not only can any lipid be used as a drawing medium, but the process itself is founded on the molecular properties of lipids (oil and water don’t mix). Kitchen lithography, a DIY adaptation of this traditional and notoriously labour-intensive printmaking process, harkens readily to conversations about food and feminism. It breaks away from the authority of traditional litho, and brings it into a space of accessibility and community.

I started working in lithography when I wanted to use fat, particularly culinary and my own body fat as a drawing medium. What are the social hierarchies and transformations of such a versatile, necessary and divisive group of materials? From culinary products, beauty trends to my own “body fat” harvested during my time breastfeeding, this work explores my own experiences and complex relationship to fats/my body as a platform for how we moralize certain foods along the lines of race, class and culture, and how perceptions of value based on body size impact our daily lives.
