Life is but Order & Chaos… From Adelaide to Perth Sky, UK-based artist Ivan Smith, whose work has been exhibited internationally, brings Order & Chaos to Perth Sky Sculpture Park as part of our inaugural exhibition. Ivan Smith
Shipped and on its way across our beautiful Nullarbor Plain, this large-scale work is the next feature in our series, ‘Perth Sky…Making Of.’
The sculpture brings together two materials with very different histories: industrial steel and limestone. Precise fabricated frames hold irregular stone forms shaped over millions of years, creating a tension between human order and the forces of the natural world.
Originally developed in South Australia, Order & Chaos was made in collaboration with George Andric and Chris Ormerod, and emerged through a process of studio experimentation, fabrication, and close material dialogue. It was developed at George Andric’s studio in Adelaide, where its structural systems and stone relationships were tested and refined before installation.

The work was later presented with our good friends, Palmer Sculpture Biennial 2026 South Australia, where it was installed in its first public context, engaging directly with landscape, scale, and environmental conditions. Palmer Sculpture Biennial
Across his wider practice, the Derbyshire-based Smith works with found, discarded and everyday materials, examining the traces human behaviour leaves on the environments around us.
Order & Chaos now begins a new chapter in Western Australia, installed within the bushland landscape at Perth Sky under WA’s vast starry skies.
Perth Sky Sculpture Park opens for public visitation Perth Observatory from 1 November 2026. Tickets on sale end September.
