The Counihan Gallery was established in 1999 in honour of the Australian artist Noel Counihan (1913-1986). The Gallery aims to program exhibitions engaging with contemporary cultural and social issues.

Art, conversation and live sound come together at Counihan Gallery.

Join artists Axel Garay and Katie Paine as they share insights into their creative practices, explore their ideas and processes, and respond to one another’s work.

The afternoon continues with an immersive live cello performance by Thomas Veitch, featuring an original soundscape created in collaboration with Axel.

🧘‍♀️Free guided meditation with artist, Nadège Philippe-Janon! If you’ve been spending too long staring at a small glowing rectangle, this is for you.

Join us at Counihan Gallery for a group hypno-meditation session and attention excercise, amidst the artist's current exhibition, Ecologies of Attention.

Combining methods of relaxation and suggestion from hypnosis and meditation, this experience aims to harness our capacity to be absorbed and direct it into more inquisitive and mindful ways of attending to the world around us.

Nadège Philippe-Janon is an early career artist based between Southern lutruwita/Tasmania and Naarm/Melbourne. She is currently undertaking a PhD at the Victorian College of the Arts, titled Peacocks, Pendulums and Prisms: the Ecologies of Attention.

Yoga mats will be available or BYO. This workshop is warmly recommended for adults.

Artwork in focus.

In 'smart/blind' by Nadège Philippe-Janon, archived footage is projected onto intermittently opening and closing vertical blinds, mimicking smart technologies and the split focus they engender.

Visually referencing both physical and digital windows, the work draws on the notion of thresholds between 'inside' and 'outside' to comment on the tension between technology’s promise of optimisation and the realities of living within increasingly technology-mediated environments.

Nadège's exhibition, Ecologies of Attention, is on show in the middle gallery until 25 October.
