Documentation of Soyo Paek, infiltration / 침윤하는 회화

Driven by water and gravity, infiltration brings what lies on the reverse of the canvas to the surface, creating a passage where intentional marks meet physical residue.

Rooted in questions of existence and relation, Soyo Paek’s practice works through language and material as mutable grounds. Layers gather, shift, and interrupt as surfaces hold the trace of contact and passage. Painting operates as a field of negotiation where textures press against one another without arriving at closure. Formed across linguistic and geographic crossings, her practice inhabits states of translation and adjustment. Completion gives ways to continuation, gestures persist, and materials carry the strain of movement.

Documentation from ‘Saga City’, Asha Maria Dare - as part of Materialisations residency program.

Saga City mobilises a semantic slip between saga, city and sagacity to observe the relationship between city life, perception, and the production of meaning. Locating the pursuit of wisdom within processes of duration, movement and repetition - the city emerges as a field of imagination and relations made up of paths and traces, informed by suggested regulatory symbolism. Meaning is produced through the accumulation of embodied encounters that remain unstable and unfinished.

Of Tamil and British heritage, and raised between Hong Kong, England, the United States, Sri Lanka and Australia, Dare’s work reflects a life shaped by multiple cultural and geographic worlds. She trained in filmmaking at RMIT and painting at the National Art School (NAS), Sydney. In 2024, she participated in a residency program as part of The Geoffrey Bawa Trust in Colombo, Sri Lanka during which she held an open studio alongside Indian architect Anupama Kundoo. Based in Naarm/Melbourne, she has exhibited at ACMI, Sawtooth ARI, Faux Gallery, Seventh Gallery, Visual Diary and Contemporary Centre of Photography (CCP)

Documentation of ‘Kangaroo Poo’, Nik Pantazopoulos. Accompanying essay by Shaan Syed available to read via link on our website.

In this photographic series, Nik Pantazopoulos turns to figurative image-making to interrogate masculinity in a cycle of recalcitration, submission, and reconstruction. Through the manipulation of pictorial space, he constructs 2D and 3D cutouts that stage fictions of the masculine subject in quotidian scenarios, foregrounding the body as both object and condition.

Informed by French structuralism, the work frames subjectivity as split and perpetually in a state of repetition. Pantazopoulos’s figures act out everyday actions as recursive gestures, suggesting attempts at transformation that remain bound to cycles of insufficiency as they attempt to escape themselves.

In “The eater” a cartoon-like male figure sits at a dining table, sucking the bones of a fish, his shirt, stained. Below, pools of fish and prawns circulate among abstract forms. His flailing arms evoke a data set drawn from a collective unconscious, coalescing into action with coral-fingers. An octopus extends its te****le beyond the picture frame and taps him on the shoulder - a recurring, disruptive psychological motif.

Pantazopoulos draws on unconscious imagery to render masculine figures driven by oral, a**l, ocular, and ph***ic impulses. Vulnerable and abject, they are caught in repetitive cycles of recalcitration, submission and reconstruction
