Next Wave is seeking feedback!

Their 2025 survey invites you to share how you’ve connected with Next Wave in the past—and to help shape the kinds of programs and opportunities you want to see next.

To show their gratitude for your time and energy in responding, they’re going to be giving away some cute Next Wave caps designed in collaboration with Wasielah Noorsjamsi—a member of An.Other Collective (and one of their 2024/25 Kickstart artists).

You can drop into the Radio Composite page now to enjoy audio treats from our in-house team and program partners!

Imagined as a contemporary theatre of sonic art, performance, experimental music, talks, criticism, audio workshops, and reading groups, Composite Radio is a platform supporting interdisciplinary, critical, and speculative work that attunes (to)/detunes (from) the currents of our time.

Broadcasting from the Brunswick Mechanics Institute, which originally opened in 1868 as a lending library for the local community and is now home to Next Wave a multi-arts organisation nurturing early-career artists.

DAMP Video Anthology
Saturday 26 October, 4–6pm

This selection of short video works, made between 1997 and 2008, range from quickly captured playful scenarios to elaborately constructed narratives. Established in Naarm/Melbourne in 1995, DAMP’s multidisciplinary practice over three decades has consistently addressed the relationship between artist and audience and examined individual and collective notions of value and desire.

The screening will be introduced by curator Rosemary and members of DAMP, and precedes the launch of Rosemary's new publication, 'Art holds a high place in my life: DAMP Monograph 1995–'. published by 3-ply.

Coming soon!

The first Composite event at the Brunswick Mechanics Institute is next week!

Come to the premiere of a new experimental performance lecture by Catherine Ryan, entitled: 'Snap! (You Have Nothing to Reconnect But Your Chains)'.

In Cathrine's words: "This tongue-in-cheek piece probes the telling of origin stories about the settler-colonial society of Victoria. It’s what would happen if Uncle Colm from Derry Girls and Philomena Cunk competed in a Lipsynch for your Life on Ru Paul’s Drag Race."

So excited to see this coming to our theatre at Mechanics Institute 👀✨

Some big news from Composite 🎉

We are thrilled to announce our relocation to Brunswick Mechanics Institute as part of a new programming residency with our friends at Next Wave!

This marks our departure from our inaugural venue at Collingwood Yards. Composite was founded at Collingwood Yards with the aim of providing specialist development and promotional support to visual artists working at the intersection of visual arts, media arts, and film sectors. As part of the first wave of tenants, from 2020-2024, Composite staged countless exhibitions, screenings, discussions, broadcasts, and other activities, along with programming partnerships with other organisations.

We are grateful for the support of the City of Yarra, Creative Victoria, and Creative Australia during these formative years. We also acknowledge that our work has taken place on the unceded land of the Wurundjeri people of the Woiwurrung language group.

In this new location, we are beginning to explore some exciting options for Composite’s long term future. Stay tuned for updates in the coming months!
