Friday night was a great evening of celebration 🥹
Thanks to all the wonderful people (and dogs) that made it out to Hillvale last weekend for the opening of our fourth annual Hillvale Photo Trophy exhibition! We were so happy to see such an incredible turnout. To the artists that make this exhibition possible, thank you - your work and your support is pivotal to the present and future of our gallery. Congratulations again to all the winners.

We are excited to announce the three judges for the 2026 Hillvale Photo Trophy: Clare Rae, Matt Shaw and Nur Aishah Kenton. The judges will be pouring over 1000+ entries to decide the major winner of the 2026 Hillvale Photo Trophy alongside the other 11 other prize winners.

Clare Rae (Clare Rae) is an artist and educator from Naarm / Melbourne. In her lens-based practice Clare explores gesture, space and architecture to examine structures of power and their impacts on the body. She has been making and exhibiting artwork in Australia and abroad for 20 years.

Matt Shaw (Matt Shaw) is a visual artist working across photography, video and casting. Guided by a documentary sensibility, his work centres on people: their identity, their stories, and the portals they open into other worlds. Scouting sidewalks and subcultures, Matt uses his camera to bring a cast of characters into a world of his own, one that is dreamy, playful and strangely tender.

Nur Aishah Abdullah Farid Kenton (Nur Aishah A F Kenton) is a Singapore-born, Malay-Australian photographer, artist and educator whose practice is grounded in collaboration, participation and community engagement.

Our sincere thanks to Ilsa, Aishah and Shelley for trusting us with their projects and sharing their incredible work with the Hillvale community and we’re particularly proud of the installation design of both exhibitions.

OPEN CALL 2027: applications close this Sunday 27th September at 11:59pm AEST. 👀

The Hillvale Gallery Open Call invites proposals from photographic artists for our exhibition program to be held in 2027.

Hillvale Gallery is dedicated to supporting, elevating and exhibiting both emerging and established local artists working across all forms of photography. Built upon the same values as Hillvale Photo, our independent photo lab, the gallery serves as a platform for photographers to express and expand their practice.

We encourage all artists practicing photography to submit proposals for solo, collective or curated group shows.

Our call out will be assessed by a selection committee of local artists and curators.

Selected artists will receive direct support from Hillvale, including gallery space, artist fee, installation support and more. To date, Hillvale has supported and paid over 60 artists to exhibit in 38 exhibitions over the past four years of programming.

There is no fee to apply. Due to the amount of proposals received we are not able to offer feedback.

Although we love to see applications from international artists, we do prioritise Australian-based artists, as we consider the exhibition process to be collaborative and ask that artists are present for both the installation and exhibition opening.

All applicants will be notified by the end of October, 2026

You’re invited to take part in ‘Letters to Our Families’, a free participatory workshop extending the themes of our current exhibition ‘Returning’, inviting participants to reflect on family, memory, belonging and intergenerational connection. Through guided prompts, participants will write letters to family members (past, present or future) including parents, children, chosen family, or themselves.

Participants are encouraged to bring photographs, documents or other materials from their own family archives, or to send images prior to the workshop. These personal archives can become starting points for writing, or be incorporated directly into the letters. A printer will be available on site to support participants in printing their images. Participants will also be invited to annotate, draw on, sew or add written text to their family photographs and archival materials, creating new layers of personal meaning and memory.

The workshop reflects Aishah and Shelley’s shared use of text and layering within their photographic practices, where images, words, materials and personal histories come together to create multiple layers of meaning. By bringing personal archives into the workshop, participants are invited to similarly build upon and reinterpret their own family histories, adding new layers through writing, drawing and image-making.

12 𝘔𝘖𝘖𝘕𝘚 is a long-form documentary project by Ilsa Wynne—Hoelscher that reconsiders photographic representations of birth through a series bringing together twelve encounters with birth across twelve separate lunar cycles. Working with the tactile qualities of analogue film, Wynne—Hoelscher creates images that embrace vulnerability, intimacy and imperfection, situating birth within a broader history of documentary photography.

𝘙𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 considers the act of revisiting one’s motherland, where the notion of home is shaped by both continuity and change. To return as an adult is to encounter landscapes, places, and relationships that carry the resonance of childhood, yet feel creased by the passage of time.
