This National Reconciliation Week, we reflect on this year’s theme: All In.

At Geelong Sports Museum, we recognise the stories, histories and cultures that have shaped the land on which we gather, play and connect. We pay our respects to the Wadawurrung people and to Elders past, present, and emerging.

Reconciliation asks all of us to listen, learn and walk forward together.

With Sir Doug Nicholls Round at .stadium this afternoon, we're reflecting on an important chapter of local sporting history.

Poorne Yarriworre, known as Albert "Pompey" Austin, was a Djargurd Wurrung and Djab Wurrung man and one of the great athletes of the 19th century. His speed and skill led to selection in Geelong Football Club's season opener in 1872, making him the first Indigenous player in VFL/AFL history.

A pioneer whose legacy continues to shape Australian Sport.

We thank the Austin family for working with us to share Pompey's story, and acknowledge that cultural permission to use this image was granted by his descendants via State Library of Victoria.

🎈It’s International Museum Day!

This year’s theme is ‘Museums Uniting a Divided World’ and at Geelong Sports Museum, sport is our shared language.

It connects generations, cultures, and communities. From grassroots clubs to elite athlete moments, from the stands to the stories unfolding behind the scenes.

We celebrate the pride of our local sporting community, the power of inclusion and diversity in sport, and the unique way sport brings people together.

If this is news to you, you’re not alone!

It’s one of the more surprising chapters in Kardinia Park’s history, and one that deserves a little more attention... 🐘

Back in 1903, the park was home to a zoo featuring around 20 species, from African and Indian monkeys to ostriches, emus and lemurs. There was even an elephant that visitors could ride.

Kardinia Park has long been a place of sport, spectacle, and stories like this.

Visit Geelong Sports Museum to uncover more.

Last Call! 📣

POLLY: The Legend of Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer is coming to a close on May 30.

Presented by the museum and Bob Gartland OAM, this exhibition invites visitors to look back into a time when Polly posters were plastered on bedroom walls and newspaper clippings were pasted into scrapbooks.

With only a few weeks left, this is definitely something you do not want to miss! ⭐️

Geelong Sports Museum is open 10:00am to 2:30pm Thursday through to Saturday.

This Mother's Day, we're celebrating the quiet contributions that shaped generations of sport.

Before the trophies and crowds, there were mums and motherly figures washing guernseys, slicing oranges, standing on the sidelines in the rain, and stepping in to keep score or umpire when needed.

Sport as we know it exists because of moments like these.

Happy Mother's Day 💐
