The National Wool Museum is a leading member of the City of Greater Geelong's arts and cultural community. Set in an historic 1872 bluestone woolstore, the Museum building formed part of a vast complex housing the Wool Broking firm of Dennys Lascelles Ltd in the times when Geelong was considered the

wool capital of the world. The Museum presents the timeless Australian story of wool, from sheep farming and wool production through to the processing of fleece into fabric. A visit to the National Wool Museum is an essential part of a visit to Geelong and the Bellarine. TERMS & CONDITIONS: Geelong Australia

These photographs almost didn't survive.

Found tucked inside a water damaged album, these 1960s images document the journey of Australian wool from sheep in the paddock through to folded fabric ready for the world.

The album was carefully dismantled for conservation, now with a fitting place in our collection.

Swipe for an authentic view into an iconic industry that once employed tens of thousands of Australians 👉

Tammy Gilson is a proud Wadawurrung woman and award-winning weaver who uses her Cultural practice to revive the tradition of possum skin cloak making.

In Wadawurrung wurru (language of the Wadawurrung) walert is the word for brush-tail possum. Walert walert is a highly significant artefact and each one carries deep spiritual connection and appreciation to family and Culture. A baby was given a skin at birth, which would be added to as they grew and would also tell their story.

The walert walert denotes a continuum of cultural practice and identity. See the walert walert and learn more at Interwoven: Fibre Art and Fashion, on display until 12th July.

Some things never really change.

This advertisement for Physician Wool Blankets ran in 1959, the same year your mum, or her mum, might have actually seen it on a magazine page.

Wool blankets were often traditional engagement gifts and prized wedding presents that became family heirlooms. Its the kind of thing you remember from your grandmother's spare room.

The collector of this article put it best:

“There is no modern replacement with the integrity of these old blankets. Romantic, sensible, special, familiar. And nothing else feels so appropriate in so many situations.”

This Mother's Day, we're thinking about all the small, warm things that get handed down and never forgotten.

Happy Mothers Day 💐

Some donations arrive with a box of photographs, a handwritten receipt, and 74 years of family history folded inside.

In 2025, Theresa Joy Hodge donated her mother's fox fur coat to the National Wool Museum.

It was made from 21 fox skins her father Charles shot on moonlit nights around Bacchus Marsh in the 1950s.

It was then crafted by Melbourne furriers Nettlebergs for Twenty Pounds and Nine Shillings.

Now it’s a proud part of our collection.

‘Federation Flora’ was created by 13 members of the Geelong Handweavers and Spinners Guild to celebrate 100 years of Federation in Australia.

Accompanied by her felt boots and woven hat, this unique doll won 1st prize in the Bendigo Sheep and Wool Show Woolcraft Competition.

Now housed in the museum collection for preservation, it serves as a beautiful example of hand crafted collaboration within a group of women.

This small fundraising badge was produced to celebrate the end of WWI in 1919.

They were sold on trams, at railway stations, and at rallies to raise money for those affected by the war right here in the Greater Geelong region.

Printed in cream, gold and blue, a white dove carrying an olive branch sits at its centre, with a small Union Jack cloth badge attached through the pin.

Affordable by design, badges like this one were accessible to almost everyone, which made them both a practical fundraising tool and a keepsake worth holding onto.

Over a century later, it still is. Lest we forget.
