Waterlines is a new body of work by Linda Joy exploring the rivers, wetlands, springs and aquifers of the Northern Territory landscape – the waterways that sustain ecosystems and communities.

Through a series of monochromatic ink works on linen and paper, the exhibition considers water as both subject and an object of composition.

Working primarily from an aerial perspective, this body of work traces the pathways and patterns carved by water as it moves across the landscape. From our wild wet season storms, carving river channels, feeding wetlands and connecting surface flows to deeper underground reservoirs. Alongside these views are imagined cross-sections of the region’s ancient aquifers, revealing the unseen systems that exist beneath the ground and support life above.

The project began with research into the waterways surrounding Mataranka, Little Roper River and the Tindall Aquifer. Learning about the delicate balance of these rivers and spring-fed environments prompted a broader exploration of the Territory’s water systems and the complex relationships between surface water, underground aquifers, the ecosystems they sustain and how human intervention can affect this fragile connectiveness.

Linda Joy is a Darwin based practicing visual artist. From a young age she was inspired by oil painting and photography, studying the later at the Queensland College of Art in the early eighties.

Linda moved to the Territory in 1994 with her three daughters and furthered her practice in printmaking and painting through a Bachelor of Fine Arts at NTU. Some years later, she completed a Bachelor of Education, culminating in her position as Senior Arts Teacher at a local high school for a number of years. She has been the administrator of Darwin Visual Arts Association, exhibited her work in numerous group and solo exhibitions in the NT and Australia, and has been the recipient of several art awards and residencies.

She divides her time between bush camps, family and the studio and is recognised for her unique mark and contribution to the representation of the Northern Territory landscape. Her artistic journey is underpinned by her journals. These are extensive reflections of not only her Australian and international travels, but also the development of her love for the bush and interpreting country.
