Mason Gallery Premium quality Australian Aboriginal Art Gallery, with an extensive selection of art and handcrafts With great sadness, Reg Mason passed away in December 2006.

In September 1982, Reg and Debra Mason and their family, went into Arnhemland for work. Shortly after their arrival, the local Aboriginal population of the Oenpelli area approached Reg to buy their paintings. Reg did so for some time, but the quantity of work became so great that he found it necessary to market some of the collection – and the Arnhemland Art Gallery was born. Over the next few years, Reg became the largest dealer of work from the Western Arnhemland area, and the family lived in the region for 20 years. His children grew up with the local community, and the family were widely recognised as being culturally acceptable by the local clans. Major galleries around the country were supplied with artworks, and many of the pieces that now hang in the Museums and Public Art Galleries around Australia and internationally had their origins with Arnhemland Art. In 1997, the Arnhemland Art Gallery was opened in Darwin by Vicki Mason, Reg and Debra’s daughter, to provide a retail outlet for the major works coming out of Arnhemland. While the gallery was successful, many people also wanted to purchase works from the Central regions of Australia, and the name of the gallery was changed to Mason Gallery. Reg and Debra’s son, Tony, moved to Alice Springs in 2001, where he now sources the works from Central Australia. The Mason Gallery displays works by many of the major artists from the Western Desert, Utopia Eastern Desert, Arnhemland and the Top End. It is the ambition of the gallery to become a provider of quality works from these regions. Debra, Tony and Vicki maintain the reputation of presenting high quality Aboriginal Art, and Reg’s ambition has gradually, but undeniably, taken shape.

Maluya Jugadai (Molly) is also making her Mason Gallery debut. Molly was the eldest daughter of artists Narputta Nangala and Timmy Jugadai Tjungurrayi. Her mother granted Molly permission to paint the story of the massive salt lake, Kaarkurutintya (Lake MacDonald), which is Narputta’s sacred country. Surrounded by the ‘Puli Puli’ (natural rock formations) that Molly paints, the lake is also often depicted during the dry season and is sometimes painted as it appears after heavy rains.

We are delighted to have added two new artists to Mason Gallery to the artists page our website who are both making their gallery debut with us.

The first new artist we would like to introduce is Samantha Napaltjarri Daniels. Samantha is the granddaughter of renowned Aboriginal artists Linda Syddick Napaltjarri and Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, continuing a strong artistic and cultural legacy through her own work.

We are so proud to be able to display this beyond magnificent painting by Ningura Napurrula – stretched on a show frame and now hanging in Mason Gallery for you to be amazed by. Words cannot describe the power and presence of this piece, which occupies almost an entire half of one of Mason Gallery’s show walls.

Ningura was born (c.1938) at Watulka, south of the Kiwirrkura Community, WA. Before becoming one of the most important and celebrated artists in the Australian Aboriginal Art Movement, she participated in a collaborative painting by senior Pintupi women, which was included in the ‘Papunya Tula: Genesis and Genius’ exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW. Ningura was selected to represent the Western Desert artists and went to Paris with Aboriginal people from other parts of Australia to paint the ceiling of the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac in Paris.

Selected awards: Alice Prize, highly recommended (2002) and Finalist, 18th Telstra Art Award (2001).
Selected exhibitions: Art Gallery of NSW (2000), Peintres Pintupi, Galerie DAD, Mantes-la-Jolie, France (2004); Gifted: Contemporary Aboriginal Art: The Mollie Gowing Acquisition Fund, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2006–2007); Papunya Tula Artists – across the board, Utopia Arts Sydney (2006); and Oceanic Art, Galerie DAD, Paris, France (2006).
