‘Once Upon a Time’ 2024
Oil on silver gelatin print, hand-poured resin frame
60 x 90cm, edition 1 of 3

Once upon a time a centre called Don Dale housed youth in detention. The children were moved to a neighbouring facility and the old site was left unoccupied after a Royal Commission recommended its closure in 2018. The jungle began to take over.

I captured this photograph of the old Don Dale site using 35mm black and white film and developed the print in a photographic dark room. I then rubbed a thin layer of transparent oil colours over its surface to evoke a surreal blurring between the real and the imagined. I made the frame by casting an old classical frame and pouring in resin with translucent inks. ‘Once Upon a Time’ illicits the language of fairy tales, dreams and child-like longing. But in this case, ‘Once Upon a Time’ represents a true place that existed/exists to incarcerate our young people.

This Friday the 20th at 6pm, previous Coconut Studios artists the Tennant Creek Brio open ‘Juparnta Ngattu Minjinypa Iconocrisis’

In 2017, I happened upon an exhibition of the TCB and it rocked me. Fabian Brown and Rupert Betheras’s work on Masonite board and old TVs felt like a tear in the order of things that I now realise was the rumblings of a movement. The exhibition opening tomorrow night is a survey of the collective’s work that includes pieces that have shown at Coconut Studios. I’m wrapped about this; honoured to have worked with these brilliant artists and in anticipation of what will no doubt be an incredible experience, seeing them shown on such a scale and in one of the country’s leading contemporary art galleries (as they should be). Do what you can to get there. You won’t leave unchanged.
