Outstation Gallery Outstation Gallery is situated in Darwin on Larrakia country and presents contemporary art from remote Australia

Outstation Gallery, set on the beautiful Darwin harbour, is a collaboration between two of Darwin’s leading contemporary art gallerists, Matt Ward and Paul Johnstone. United by a shared vision for supporting and promoting world-class Aboriginal art, they work closely with Aboriginal-owned art centres to deliver an exceptional and ethical art experience. Outstation Gallery is also proud to exhibit contemporary art from non-Indigenous artists who currently reside in, or have a connection to the Darwin region. A modern, flexible, beautifully-lit exhibition space, Outstation Gallery on the Waterfront, welcomes visitors and locals alike, encouraging respect and appreciation for the complex and powerful art, stories and culture on show. Outstation Gallery is a member and signatory to the Indigenous Art Code, and is committed to fair dealing with artists, their art centres and communities.

Sonia Martignon grew up in the Territory - camping and exploring - and it shows.

Her Sentinels series is painted and burnt by hand into cut plywood and it celebrates the cycad. It’s a plant that has endured for millions of years through fire, drought and profound change.

In a show about the Build Up renewal, it’s hard to think of a better emblem.

What an opening! This is our first group show of this kind, celebrating the Buildup; celebrating the diversity of artists working across the NT; celebrating that moment, that breath, before the first big rains; celebrating love of this place.

‘Buildup’ shares the work of 5 very different artists bringing to life 5 very different visions of the NT - and thank you to Steve Gough, Sonia Martignon and Molly Burrage for joining us for the launch - I know Meagan Jacobs and Julia Collinson, who are living and working in Ampilatwatja, were also with us in spirit.

And thankyou to everyone else who came to celebrate and enjoy this really beautiful group exhibition. It was a great afternoon.

‘Buildup’ is on until Saturday 31st October, so if you missed the opening make sure you don’t miss the show.

The build up is the Northern Territory's best kept secret; a humid beauty that locals know well and visitors rarely see.

“I paint it in different colours but it always goes back to my black soil Country. We’ve got a lot of black soil Country throughout our Country. Once you’re in it you can get stuck in it. I remember being stuck in black soil Country and had incidents even after being told not to go there. Because of me having encounters on black soil Country I can recollect my times on my Country. They would say, don’t go that way, that’s black soil Country! But sometimes there is only one road. It plays a big part in me, that’s what I think about in my Country, that black soil.” - Christine Farrer

Amongst the glass baskets and eel traps of Jenni Kemarre Martiniello we also have a very special egg.

The ‘Shoalhaven Rainbow Serpent Egg’ evokes the river system and landscape as a deeply entwined expression of country and culture. It is both fragile and full of life.

We are appropriating something that belongs to the dominant culture or the colonizing culture and turning it to our use so it becomes a vehicle of our cultural expression. You are invited! Please join the artists of Bidyadanga this Saturday 26th September at 1030 and explore their amazing group show ‘See it, Say it’

Bidyadanga Artists is a vibrant art centre on the Kimberley coast, around 180 km south of Broome.

The centre represents five language groups, Karajarri, Juwaliny, Mangala, Nyangumarta and Yulparija, along with other groups from the region, whose diverse traditions are reflected in distinctive artistic styles and stories.

See you Saturday.
