Mum & my sister Nonie were among the first to arrive on opening night of Hooray for Hollywood, the big group show I co-curated at the Hotel Hollywood in 2024.

Rupert, Alba & I somehow pulled together more than 100 artists, from famous to emerging, and filled the entire pre-reno first floor.

An hour or so after this photo was taken, more than 600 punters were swarming the entrance trying to get in. Halfway through the night we had to shut both the pub and the gallery for fear someone would get hurt.

It took six months to organise. It was chaotic, slightly dangerous and ridiculously fun. A helluva night.

Thanks to everyone who exhibited, came, or couldn’t get in.

Thank you to all the friends & strangers who rocked up to my opening last night at the Trop. It meant more to me than you probably know.

There’s something ironic about the way artists spend a lifetime working in solitude, all in an attempt to connect with other humans. And opening parties are when we finally get to share our meditations on the strange business of being alive.

Maybe it’s an ancient impulse. The caveman returning to the village to share the antelope he’d hunted. The artists’ contribution is the antelopes we’ve scrawled on the cave walls.

I truly appreciate everyone who came to see my cave drawings last night.

Gone Troppo will remain on display until the end of Sept. Come in for coffee, cocktails, comestibles and culture.

There’s a funny story behind the sale of this painting, which is 120x80cm and painted on rigid acoustic felt.

The side you’re looking at was originally the back.

The daubs, scribbles and splatters weren’t intended as a composition. I was simply testing how the porous felt responded to different materials & mark-making. Meanwhile, I’d only just begun painting the “proper” side.

Then two young collectors, Georgie and Derek, saw it—and wanted the accidental side.

They weren’t at all concerned that the front was unfinished, because they had no intention of displaying it. They chose the side that was never meant to be seen.

Perhaps that’s why it worked. I made these marks without trying to impress anyone, explain anything or cater to anyone. The work appeared before my ego had a chance to arrive.

A useful reminder that sometimes the part you aren’t focused on is the part that feels most alive.

Artists spend a long time making their work. You build a relationship with the piece you’re working on. If you’re lucky, it sells. And you rarely ever see each other again.

I’ve sold over a thousand prints and paintings since Dani and I moved back from NYC eight years ago. Most simply disappeared into other people’s lives.

These two clown works turned up in a Sydney house I was visiting. The owner bought them during a visit to my East Village studio in 1991.

It took us 35 years for us to stumble across each other again.
